Lesson: Elements, techniques and literary devices in poetry – Weeks 3-4

This time you will learn about the three structures of poetry. I expect you to write your own poem
using one of these structures.
Activity 1: Establish
Write your ideas about the terms below. Write your answers in the columns.

written in metrical, regular, but unrhymed lines
2. BREAK
⚫ A device which is used at the end of a line and the beginning of the next line in a poem.
⚫ It is employed with a traditional punctuation.
⚫ The place where the poet chooses to end one line and begin another.
3. ENJAMBMENT
⚫ It is moving over from one line to another without a terminating punctuation mark.
⚫ It is running on of a thought from one line to another without final punctuation.
4.Typography - it is the visual component of the written word
⚫ It is the art and technique in arranging type to make the written language legible, readable,
and appealing when displayed.
Isn’t exciting to create your own using those structures? Which of the structures would you use in
writing your poem today? Why?
Activity 2: Equip
Look here! You will now read some poems where you can see how poets employed the three
structures of poetry. Read carefully and identify which structure is used. Write your answer in the
box below each poem.
Sweet pet by day, hunter by night.
She sleeps,
She eats, she plays. My feet caught in
white paws.
Turning and turning in the widening
gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot

Poor thing, better run quick, ‘cause

She’ll sweetly beg for fuss, but don’t
be fooled.
hold;
The blood dimmed tide is loosed, and
everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is
drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the
worst
Are full of passionate intensity…
Answer:
It is a beauteous Evening, calm and
free;
The holy time is quiet as a Nun
Breathless with adoration; the broad
sun
Is sinking down in its tranquility;
The gentleness of heaven is on the
Sea;
Listen! The mighty Being is awake
And doth with his eternal motion
make
A sound like thunder---everlastingly.
Answer:
“A thing of beauty is a joy forever:
Its loveliness increases; it will never
Pass into nothingness but still will keep
A bower quiet for us, and asleep
Full of sweet dreams, and health, and
quiet breathing”
