Assignment # 04 (CME210); Week of September 28, 2020
Question 1: Compressive centric forces of 30 kips are applied at both ends of the assembly to rigid
plates. Determine the normal stresses in the steel core and the aluminum shell. Knowing that; Es =
29 x 106 psi and Ea = 10.6 x 106 psi.
Question 2: The specimen shown in the figure is made from a 2-inch diameter cylindrical rod with
two 2.75-inch diameter outer sleeves bonded to the rod as shown. Knowing that the E value is 29
x 106 psi, determine the load P corresponding to a total deformation of 0.004-inch.
Question 3: A single axial load of magnitude P = 15 kips is applied at end C of the steel rod ABC.
Knowing that E = 30 × 106 psi, determine the diameter d of portion BC for which the deflection of
point C will be 0.05 in.

Question 4: Two cylindrical rods, one of steel and the other of brass, are joined at C and restrained
by rigid supports at A and E. For the loading shown and knowing that Es = 200 GPa and Eb = 105
GPa, determine the deflection of point C.
Question 5: Two solid cylindrical rods are joined at B and loaded as shown. Rod AB is made of
steel (E = 200 x 103 MPa), and rod BC of brass (E = 100 x 103 MPa). Determine:
a. The total deflection of the composite rod ABC
b. The deflection of point B

Question 6: The three steel bars shown in Figure are pin connected to a rigid member. If the applied
load on the member is 15 kN, determine the force developed in each bar. Bars AB and EF each
have a cross-sectional area of 50 mm2, and bar CD has a cross-sectional area of 30 mm2.
