Engine Magnetic Speed/Position Lost
Both of Two Signals - Data Erratic,
Intermittent, or Incorrect
EFFECT
Fueling to the injectors is
disabled and the engine
can not be started.
Engine Speed Sensor and Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit
Circuit Description
The engine speed sensor and the camshaft position sensor are connected to the engine
wiring harness.
Component Location
The engine speed sensor reads a tone wheel mounted to the engine crankshaft. The
sensor is located on the left side of the cylinder block toward the flywheel.
The camshaft position sensor reads a tone wheel inside the front gear cover. The sensor is
located on the left side of the engine on the back of the gear housing.
Shop Talk
The engine speed sensor and camshaft position sensor use the same style sensor and the
connector keys are the same. It is possible to connect the wiring harness to the incorrect
sensors. If this occurs, the electronic control module (ECM) will detect the problem and the
engine will not start. Once the connector problem is corrected, the engine can be started
and the fault code will become inactive.
