Pablo Picasso 1881-1973 5. Picasso was born into a creative family of art teachers and artists. Overview Pablo Picasso was born on October 25, 1881 in Malaga, Spain. He supposedly could draw before he could talk. Pencil was Picasso’s first word! At age 9, Picasso finished his first painting and by age 13 he had out mastered his father who was an art teacher. Picasso then went to art school and received much training. He then made his first trip to Paris in 1900, which at the time was the art capital of Europe. There he learned to speak French. It was then in 1901 he began to sign his paintings with just his last name. He met famous artist Henri Matisse, who became his life-long friend and rival. Then the emergence of Cubism became part of his style of art where he created collage in 1912 by attaching news clippings and oilcloth to the surface of his paintings. He stood out as an opponent of “the straight line” and expressed this concept in his building designs. Homage to Monogold, 2011 World War II was a very difficult time for him and his family. After the war, he spent three months in the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria. This is when he began to sign his work with Hundertwasser, which in the Slavic language means “hundred.” He observed that in nature, there are no straight lines. The Kiss, 1907-1908 Tree of Life, 1905 Jim Dine’s work ranges from vibrant, large-scale paintings to rendered romantic and bronze sculptures. Much of his work is associated to the Pop Art movement, which occurred in the 1960s. Over the past five decades his subject matter has included animals, figures, puppets, his iconic hearts, tools, robes, and self-portraits. Surrealism is a form of painting that is inspired by dreams and uses many symbolic images. Frida was in a terrible trolley accident as a young girl while studying medicine. She nearly broke every bone in her body. She eventually healed and was able to walk again but the pain remained with her for the rest of her life. She decided to devote the rest of her life to painting after the trolley accident because of her love for art. When Frida was very young she married the famous Mexican artist Diego Rivera. He was known for the large murals that depicted the struggles of the Mexican working class. He painted in a tool shed where he could lay his canvas on the floor and drip and splatter the paint across the canvas without worrying about ruining the walls or floor surfaces. Pollock wanted to paint ACTION! Not landscapes, portraits, or still life. He used gallons of paint that were once used to paint his house to cover his canvases. In the corner of his artwork, he would use a hand print as a signature. He eventually stopped titling and naming his art work because he didn’t want people to look for meaning or a subject matter in his art work. Stella attended Princeton University to obtain his bachelor’s degree. At the time, studio art was not offered so much of Stella’s experience, learning and work was from his own self-taught methods. Stella’s first important show was a group show at The Museum of Modern Art’s “Sixteen Americans,” held in 1959. This exhibition established him as one of the most radical young artists working in the United States. He gained notoriety for his Black Paintings. These paintings were a series of linear shapes and squares in various shades of black. They served as an important catalyst for Minimalist art of the 1960s. A year later, he had his first one-man show. During the 1990s Stella’s work continued to expand and evolve.
