famous artist Henri Matisse, who became his life-long friend and
rival.

style of art where he created collage in 1912 by attaching news
clippings and oilcloth to the surface of his paintings.

Claude Monet
1840-1926
5.
His work is known for his individual brush strokes that
mark an “impression” on the viewer.
Overview
Claude Monet is a French painter and one of the founders of the
Impressionism movement. He rejected the traditional approach to
painting landscapes. Instead he used inspiration of his friends and
nature itself. He observed the variations of color and light caused by
the daily and seasonal changes.
Weather, lighting, and season changes influenced a series of
paintings he continued to paint later in life. The effect of the
lighting, time of day and season made his subject matter change
over time.
The water lily pond by his home was an inspiration for one of his
most celebrated works. He wanted these paintings of the water lily
pond to be presented in an oval shape room so the viewer could feel
as if they were there in the presence of the pond and where he had
painted it.

associated to the Pop Art movement, which occurred in the 1960s.

Overview
Soundsuit #2, 2009-2011
Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter known for mixing both
traditional Mexican folk art with the art style of surrealism.
Surrealism is a form of painting that is inspired by dreams
and uses many symbolic images.
Frida was in a terrible trolley accident as a young girl while
studying medicine. She nearly broke every bone in her
body. She eventually healed and was able to walk again but
the pain remained with her for the rest of her life. She
decided to devote the rest of her life to painting after the
trolley accident because of her love for art.
When Frida was very young she married the famous
Mexican artist Diego Rivera. He was known for the large
murals that depicted the struggles of the Mexican working
class.

Resources
Inspired by her own pain, struggles and the work of her
husband, Frida began to paint self-portraits that were very
personal to her heritage and life. Many of Kahlo’s paintings
have symbols in them that are used repeatedly in her
paintings. One of the symbols used in her work is the
monkey, which is a native animal to Mexico.

Jackson Pollock
1912-1956
Overview
Artworks
Jackson Pollock was an American painter, born in 1912, who became famous for his drip paintings. He painted in a tool
shed where he could lay his canvas on the floor and drip and splatter the paint across the canvas without worrying about
ruining the walls or floor surfaces.
Pollock wanted to paint ACTION! Not landscapes, portraits, or still life. He used gallons of paint that were once used to
paint his house to cover his canvases. In the corner of his artwork, he would use a hand
print as a signature. He eventually stopped titling and naming his art
work because he didn’t want people to look for meaning or a subject
matter in his art work.
