What is Symbolism?
● when a person, place, or thing stands for
something that cannot be touched (like an
idea, event, or action) it is called a symbol.
For example: an eagle
rain
a cross
snow
a scar (like Harry Potter’s)
a sunset
a river
Symbols will usually mean different things in different pieces
of literature.
a force of nature
passage of time (life and death)
freedom
“Everything is a SYMBOL of something, it seems, until proven otherwise.”
Tom Foster - H ow to Read Literature Like a Professor
Things I see as possible symbols in the novel
the marsh
bird feathers
fingernail polish
grits
fake leather alligator shoes
seeds
discarded library books
Watch the
following Dr. Seuss
video and be able
to discuss the
symbolism from a
children’s book
with a lesson for all
age groups.
