WHAT YOU NEED
TO KNOW ABOUT
THE AMAZING
CONNECTED
WORLD!
 The Internet of Things or IoT refers to the
billions of physical devices around the world
that are now connected to the internet,
collecting and sharing data, embedded with
electronics, internet connectivity, and other
forms of hardware (such as sensors).

these devices can communicate and interact
with others over the Internet, and they can
be remotely monitored and controlled.
IoT encompasses everything
connected to the internet- objects
that "talk" to each other , is made up
of devices – from simple sensors to
smartphones and wearables –
connected together,"
DEFINITION
"It's about networks, it's about
devices, and it's about data
ENABLING TECHNOLOGIES
IoT includes many
different systems,
including :
Internet connected cars
wearable devices
including health and
fitness monitoring
devices, watches, and
even human implanted
devices;
smart meters and smart
objects;
home automation
systems and lighting
controls;
smartphones that are
increasingly being used
to measure the world
around them; and
wireless sensor
networks that measure
weather, flood
defenses, tides and
more.
HISTORY
THE CONNECTED
WORLD!
 It is a network of
internet
connected
objects that are
able to collect
and exchange
data.
1.sensor/device
HOW DOES IOT
WORKS?
A sensor collects data and processed the data.
A device have sensors that communicate over the internet with other
devices or the cloud, generating data for further action.
It is anything that can be tagged or connected such as its designed to be
connected.

HOW DOES IOT
WORKS?
2. Connectivity
The cloud computing platform
It offers a wide storage
extensible computing power.
It is a network at gateways that
connect multiple devices.

HOW DOES IOT WORK?
3. Data Processing
Data is the center of
iot network concept.
It may either be simple
or complex
HOW DOES IOT
WORK?
4. User interface ( ecosystem)
 It is the software and input
device by means of which a
computer and its user
communicate or how one
controls a software application
or hardware device.

THE IOT HAS
TO INTEGRATE
THESE
COMPONENTS
OTHER IOT APPLICATION :
SMART FARMING—( DRONES AND SENSORS)
Counting plants-A successful drone flight, in addition to simply being able to count plants, can
automatically class them by size and even make a preliminary assessment of their vitality
based on whether plants are healthy or not.
Water rationing… embedded sensors measure specific qualities of the soil, mapping
variations in temperature and moisture .
How much fertilizer? Soil sensors reports moisture data at different levels and, weather
stations for above-ground information like temperature, wind speed and solar radiation ;the
sensors send data (via 6-LoWPAN )to a local gateway, which reports collected results.
APPLICATION OF IOT
 The Consumer internet of things is used for
consumer application and consumer-oriented
services. It is what almost everyone knows and talk
about.
 The Industrial internet of things describes
industries like those in manufacturing and utilities
like smart cities and smart metering
Think of one specific thing(device) and explain how
will this changed in the future.
ACTIVITY #1: IOT
ON THE FUTURE
Draw or make a sketch of the possible IoT. Think of
its features and its potential impacts on society.
Describe the IoT in it in terms of usage, implications
ands other issues involved.
Be ready to share your ouput using 5 slides power
point presentation or prepare a 3 minute video and
send through our group files. Deadline be after a
week from todays lesson.
OTHER EXAMPLES -SMART HEALTH
1.Privacy and Security issues .
CRITICISM, PROBLEMS
AND
CONTROVERSIES

Interconnectivity , over reliance to technology and privacy implication
has to be addressed.

Cyberhacking

Intelligence services might use IoT for identification, surveillance,
monitoring, location tracking, targeting for recruitment or gaining
access to networks or user credentials.
2.The need for standardization or data management
(implementation issues)

Devices should be able to communicate to exchange information.
3.Environmental impact of electronic devices

…The loss of job ? Machines are taking over the workload.
Automation replaces workers only, since it opens up avenues for
smarter individuals..(marketers, bloggers lifestyle trainers etc..)
CHALLENGES
 IoT devices, connected cars,
and edge gateways are all
potential entry points for
attack.
 - the 2016 Mirai botnet attack,
hackers specifically targeted
IoT devices, including
appliances and routers, and
disrupted many major Internet
service providers
CHALLENGES FOR IOT IN THE PHILIPPINES
Philippines belong to the top 20 countries in the world with the
highest number of internet users!
1. Internet speed is average compared to other countries.
2. Filipinos do not adapt WELL- enough to technological
advancement.
3. Research on iot is NOT one of the government high
priorities.
IMPLICATIONS
• The Internet of Things (IoT) can
allow companies to maximize business
value – sensors, software and other
technologies in physical assets can
connect and exchange data with other
devices and systems over the internet.
• This will drive innovation and greater
efficiencies in all areas of business, from
design to manufacturing.
.The future of IoT is more fascinating
than this where billions of things will
be talking to each other and human
intervention will become least.
IoT will bring macro shift in the way
we live and work
SUMMARY
1. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a
system of interrelated computing devices,
mechanical and digital machines, objects,
animals or people that are provided with
unique identifiers and the ability to
transfer data over a network without
requiring human-to-human or human-tocomputer interaction.
2. Examples of objects that can fall into
the scope of IOT include connected
security systems, thermostats, cars,
electronic appliances, lights in household
and commercial environments, alarm
clocks, speaker systems, vending
machines and more.
3.The main goals of IOT are to enable
people to communicate with each other
and to access online data and processes ,
to generate real-time data that we can
then analyze and use to create desired
business outcomes.
4.The IOT has concerns on privacy and
security issues as well as connectivity or
data management and has to be
addressed well.
QUIZ: MODIFIED TRUE OR FALSE:
Write True if the statement is true and if it is false, change the underlined word/s to make the statement correct.
1.Choosing which connectivity option is best, depending on the specific IoT application with only one purpose –getting data to the cloud.
2. The term IoT applies to any non-standard computing device that connects to wifi and transmit data.
3.Medical devices, engine sensors, industrial robots, are applications of IoT on the business sector and helps accelerate business transformations.
4. Anyone who has ever connected to the internet is a part of the IoT.
5. A smart phone is a small size wearable device with sensors and software that access fitness, health and entertainment.
6. When products do not easily connect to each other and cannot exchange information, security issues has to be addressed.
7.Devices that contain electronics such as vehicles and home appliances ,can still be connected and exchange data even without internet connection.
8.IoT can allow companies to maximize business value that can drive innovation in all areas of business from design to manufacturing.
9.A user checking video feeds in his home via phone application or web browser applies the sensor/ device component through IoT integration.
10.IoT allows devices on closed private internet connection to communicate with others and bring networks together.
HOMEWORK:
Choose one topic below and
through research , write your
brief idea on them.( Use short
bondpaper with 300 maximum
words.. Submit through the
group file one week from now)
1. How can IoT fight climate
change?
2. How can companies
leverage IoT?
3. How can IoT rescue
aviation?
4. Is it possible for a nightmare
scenario from IoT?
