Introduction to Science Laboratory Equipment The Laboratory • The laboratory is the room where you will investigate physical science topics. • It contains a variety of substances and scientific instruments to be used in doing experiments. • Today, we will be familiarizing ourselves with this new environment. The Lab and Safety • Safety is my number one priority • Lab goggles at all times • Tie your hair up • Listen at all times when myself or Mr. Nicholson are talking • Mr. Nicholson is God in the Lab room. Lab Equipment 1) Funnel • Purpose: Lab funnels are designed specifically for chemistry lab applications, like transferring liquid from a wide mouthed vessel into one with a narrow mouth, such as a graduated cylinder, test tube, or flask. 2) Stirring Rod •Purpose: Stirring rods can be used to mix chemical solutions 3) Rubber Stoppers Purpose: Keep your chemistry experiments clean and safe with rubber stoppers! These sturdy plugs fit tightly into test tubes or flasks to prevent chemical leaks and spills. 4) Test Tube Holder Purpose: To hold test tubes and place on the peg board 5) Test Tube Holder Purpose: Handheld test tube holder 6) Evaporating Dish Evaporating dishes are used to evaporate excess solvents - most commonly water - to produce a concentrated solution or a solid precipitate of the dissolved substance. 7) Watch Glass Purpose: A watch glass is used in the chemistry laboratory to weigh solids and to hold small amounts of liquids. It is a concave dish and is designed to be lightweight. 8) Florence Flask Purpose: A Florence flask is a type of flask used as an item of laboratory glassware. It is used as a container to hold liquids. A Florence flask has a round body, a single long neck, and often a flat bottom. It is designed for uniform heating, boiling, distillation and ease of swirling; 9) Overflow Beaker 10) Beaker A beaker is a simple container for stirring, mixing and heating liquids commonly used in many laboratories. 11) Graduated Cylinder A graduated cylinder, measuring cylinder or mixing cylinder is a common piece of laboratory equipment used to measure the volume of a liquid. It has a narrow cylindrical shape. Each marked line on the graduated cylinder represents the amount of liquid that has been measured. 12) Test Tube Purpose: a thin glass tube closed at one end, used to hold small amounts of material for laboratory testing or experiments. 13) Beaker Tongs Purpose: Used to handle hot beakers 14) Test Tube Rack Purpose: Used to hold test tubes 15) Burner Stand Purpose: Used as a stand to place beakers or flasks on top of, while a heat source (burner) is placed underneath. 16) Burner / Bunsen Burner a small adjustable gas burner used in laboratories. 17) Thermometer Purpose: Laboratory thermometers are used to measure temperatures or temperature changes with a high degree of precision. 18) Spatula Purpose: Spatulas are used for measuring solids, moving objects and scraping material out of beakers. Spatulas can be used for more purposes as well, including slipcovers and weights. 19) Pegboard Purpose: Used to hang glassware 20) Balance Purpose: Used to measure a small mass with precision.
