INITIAL FIELD VISIT PROTOCOL

advertisement
PURPOSE OF THE VISIT: To introduce the research and to seek, informally, pledges to participate in
the research. To meet prospective LS participants. To visit their classes if they allow it.
1. Provide personal background:
“I have recently passed my WCEs and the next step is to defend my dissertation proposal. I have
already finished the first draft and is currently being reviewed by my adviser. To convince the
panel, I need to establish the feasibility of the research including obtaining information on
prospective participants”
2. Discuss the research:
“The purpose of my research is to understand how Lesson Study develops teachers’ contentspecific pedagogical knowledge. I will study the roles and interactions of a group of five teachers
who will be involved in at least 4 cycles of LS in a span of 3 months.”
3. Describe the intervention:
“The intervention will start with a training-workshop program called PALS that will develop in
teachers the skills that they need to conduct LS in schools. Four schools will be the target of the
PALS: CNHS, DNHS, DNTVHS, and MDGC. From the training program, teachers will be asked
to decide if they want to continue with the program called MKT-Driven LS which will run for
three months (May, June, July). The teachers will meet thrice in every cycle: two 3-hour meetings
and one Saturday. These meetings can be used in line with the teachers’ LAC. It will be beneficial
to the research if the participating teachers will follow similar schedules.”
4. Explain how the school benefits:
“By participating in this research, I can promise three things as beneficial to the teachers and the
school: (1) LS is an effective activity to improve teachers’ knowledge and skills. It targets
developing instruction on difficult lessons and least-learned skills of students; (2) LS is a form of
action research and may be used for developing SIM. Part of the process is to help teachers
conduct and report LS that they can submit to competitions, and as requirements. I will make
sure to guide them enough in the writing process and facilitate the publication or presentation of
the outputs in conferences; (3) If the school decides to pursue LS independently, I will offer my
services as an expert to help the teachers go through the developing process.
5. Who do you need:
“I need teachers who are passionate about their work – people who are dedicated to making
themselves better for the benefit of others. I need participants who have initiative and are creative
and are willing to be trained. I can extend my help as research consultant to those who will
participate in the research.”
6. What support do you need from the school:
“Support for teachers by giving them time to participate in the program (will seek the DO’s
approval for CTO on Saturday sessions; Use of classroom facilities for LS activities)
