Explanation of Testing Tasks: Associations For this task, the student must identify the semantically unrelated word from a set of four words presented orally. The student must then explain his choice by telling how the other 3 items go together. e.g. Tell me which word doesn’t belong: apple, orange, window, banana. {after response is given} How are the others alike? Synonyms This task requires the student to express a synonym for the word that is presented. The word must match in meaning and part of speech. e.g. Tell me another word for angry Semantic Absurdities For this task, the student is asked to fix sentences by changing the last word in the sentence to make it semantically correct. e.g. “The plumber fixed the lights” Antonyms On this task, the student must express an opposite for the word presented that matches in part of speech. e.g. What is the opposite of hot? Definitions On this task, the student is required to tell the meaning of each test item presented verbally. e.g. What is an island? Flexible Word Use For this task, the student is required to provide 2 different meanings for the same word. e.g. Tell me what watch means. {after response} Good. Now tell me another meaning for the word watch. CLINICAL IMPRESSIONS: Results from this evaluation indicated the following: RECOMMENDATIONS: It is recommended that the IEP team review this information in conjunction with the psycho-educational evaluation and/or other critical assessments, observations and progress data to determine the best action plan to meet this student’s needs. Student meets criteria for continued speech/language therapy. Therapy is recommended. Periodic re-check. Dismissal from speech-language therapy.
