I. WARM-UP
Literature is not new to you. Even before you started formal schooling, you have already
experienced literature. Your bed time stories are forms of literature. This time, I want you to
think of words that you can remember if you hear the term LITERATURE.


about Literature. I have prepared a short introductory lecture on “What is Literature.” Access
and Watch VIDEO #2: What is Literature? Before watching the video, consider the guide
question below in the hope that you will get some learning after watching it.

Now that you have already an overview of the subject, let us know deepen your understanding
of Literature. Access and Watch VIDEO #3: Forms of Literature. This is an educational TV
show designed for high school student like you. The show is entitled GAB to GO and the
episode you will be watching will focus on the topic Literature. Before watching the video,
consider the guide question below in the hope that you will get some learning after watching it.

V. CHECK IT OUT
Remember your understanding on the difference between PROSE and POTERY? You will use
it to answer this next activity. Open your book on this subject and read pages 3-4, 9-10. Identify
the forms of literature enumerated in the book. Know their characteristics and read the
examples given in the book.
Your task for Activity No. 2 is to identify if the forms of literature enumerated in the book is
Prose or Poetry. Use the table below to accomplish the activity. Write PROSE or POETRY on
the third column.

Proverbs are commonly known in Filipino as
Salawikain. I know you have encountered
Salawikain in your elementary days.
Riddles are commonly known in Filipino as
Bugtong. I challenge you to guess the answer of
two riddles presented in your book.
3. Folksongs
Folksongs are commonly known in Filipino as
Awiting Bayan. Have you remembered any
folksong in your MAPEH?
4. Tales
Mga kwento ni Lola Basyang or Mga Alamat ng
prutas at lugar are examples of Tales.
5. Epics
Are you familiar with Biag ni Lam-ang? It is an
example of epic. Epics are poems but the epics
that you had are the „storified‟ version.
6. Corrido
The story of Ibong Adarna in your Filipino
subject is an example of Corrido.
7. Awit
The story of Florante at Laura in your Filipino
subject is an example of Awit.
8. Pasyon
Pasyon is derived from the word “passion,”
referring to the Passion of Christ. Usually
performed during Holy Week it tells about
the LIFE OF CHRIST using Filipino verses.
Cenaculo is a dramatization focusing only on the
PASSION OF CHRIST. Similar to “PASYON,” it
is performed during Holy Week.

POETRY
“Moro” is a word referring to Muslim people. The
word “moro-moro” connotes that peope during
those time acts as Moros or Muslims to perform
a play about the battle between Muslims and
Christians.

11. Carillo
This is commonly known as a form
of a shadow play.
12. Tibag
Tibag shares a common charcteristics with
Santa Cruzan which is a Filipino Christian
tradition usually performed during the month of
May. The Reyna Elena is a representation of St.
Helena similar to Tibag.
This is an old form of Filipino literature being
performed.
13. Duplo/
Karagatan
14. Zarzuela
These are musical comedies during the Spanish
and also American era.
15. Siday
This one is not found on the book but just an
additional information. Siday is a form of Waray
Poem.
