HOW ARE BALLET DANCERS TRAINED?
Girls who study ballet generally begin at the age of eight to ten. Boys often start
later. Ballet training is hard work. Ballet students must develop strength, balance, and

flexibility as well as grace. They must learn a set of movements and gestures. Girls
also learn to dance on their toes. They usually begin pointe (tip-of-the-toes) work after
three years of training.
All ballet students practice five basic positions of the feet. These five positions
form the basis of almost all ballet steps. All of these positions are performed with the
legs turned outward at the hip. The feet should be able to form a straight line on the
floor.
The turned-out position gives a dancer a more pleasing “line”. Line has to do
with the placement of the dancer’s body, in motion and at rest. All parts of the
dancer’s body must be placed in the correct position to achieve good line. Training can
improve a dancer’s line. Good line gives a dancer the greatest stability and ease of
movement. It also makes the dancer’s body seem light in weight.
All dancers take daily classes to keep their bodies flexible and strong. Most
classes begin with warm-up exercises at the barre, a railing that dancers hold onto for
support. The second part of the class consists of slow exercises that develop balance
and fluid (flowing, not jerky) motion. After this, dancers practice quick movements,
such as small jumps and leg extensions, and then large steps, turns, and leaps.

A. Read the text and question below. For each question, choose A, B, C or D.
COLDS FROM COLD WEATHER
If you dress in warm clothes, stay out of drafts, and keep dry, will you be able
to avoid catching a cold?
Many people have believed that colds are caused by getting chill and wet.
Statistically, colds do seem most common in winter and least frequent in June and
July. Observers of such patterns of occurrence therefore reasoned that keeping warm
helped to prevent colds, while getting cold and wet produced colds.
But if this is so, how can we explain accounts from Arctic and Antartic
explorers who, in spite of exhaustion, near starvation, and exposure to frigid
conditions, did not catch cold? Then , upon returning to the warmth and comforts of
civilization, they often succumbed immediately to colds.
Additional contrary evidence may be found in the experiences of prisioners of
World War II Nazi concentration camps. During the late autumn and winter months,
prisoners were forced to take showers and then stand wet and naked in open air. They
fully expected to catch colds; to their surprise , most did not.
Doctors today believe that common cold is caused not by dampness and cold
but by virus. However, if the virus is present, it does seem to thrive better in a body
whose natural powers of resistance have been weakened by exposure to the cold and
wet.

Every year students in many countries learn English. Some of these students are
young children. Others are teenagers. Many are adults. Some learn at school, others
study by themselves. A few learn English just by hearing the language in films, on
television, in the office or among their friends. But not many are lucky enough to do
that. Most people must work hard to learn another language.
Many boys and girls learn English at school because it is one of their subjects.
They study their own language, and mathematics…and another language, perhaps
French, or German or Spanish.
Many adults learn English because it is useful for their work. Teenagers often

college or university. Other people learn English because they want to read
newspapers or magazines in English.

My life is always full of activities, so I never have much time for myself.
During the week it’s the worst. I usually have to get up at half past six even though I
would really prefer to sleep much later. I don’t usually have time for breakfast because
I have to catch a bus to school at seven o’clock. The bus is usually packed with many
people. Classes at school start at a quarter to eight except on Tuesdays when they start
at seven. Each lesson is forty-five minutes long with ten-minute break in between.
After school I go shopping or just walk around the town for a while. Getting
home, I listen to the radio, watch television and maybe get a snack. Then I start doing
my homework or help my mom with some housework. Before I know it, the afternoon
is gone and it is evening.
In my family, we usually eat dinner at about seven o’clock. At dinner we
discuss what happened during the day and catch up with each others’ lives. Then I
have some time to watch TV news. Sometimes it is an interesting film or a video.
On the weekend, it is a different story. I sleep late and do whatever I wish with
my free time. I can go for a trip with friends, visit relatives or devote more time to my
hobbies. I think everyone will agree that weekends are much better than weekdays.

You should keep in your mind that your job will help determining your future,
friends and the place where you will live, as well as your income. In other words, your
career means more than just a certain kind of work, it represents a way of life.
Another point to be aware of in choosing your career is the effect this decision
has on your present life. Some people think that students who have a career mind do
better work in school than those having no plans for themselve after graduation. Others
disagree and claim that students are better if thep keep an open mind and seek a broad
base of knowledge before deciding on a career.
One serious problem faces you when you select a vocational goal: making the
right choice for yourself. You should think carefully and make a tentative choice at
first. It may develop into a permanent goal or it may not. But keep an open mind until
you know more about the occupation. This will give you an opportunity to seek
general knowledge before you attempt to specialize. You will find a general
educational background to be useful and necessary in almost any job.
When you select an occupation, remember to select a job that you think you can
do best, both for your own satisfaction and the good of all.: You should choose a
vocation that will be a challenge to you and yet one in which you can achieve success
through your abilities.
21. In what way does your career represent your way of life?
A. It helps determine the amount of money you will gain from your labor.
B. It helps determine your future friends.
C. It helps determine the place you will live.

IV.READING
A. Read the text and question below. For each question, choose A, B, C or D.
Education of students who are hard of hearing or deaf may involve the use of
powerful amplification devices, such as hearing aids, or it may use captions (printed
words that appear on a television screen or computer monitor). Many deaf or hard of
hearing students learn sign language, an organized system of gestures for
communication. Others learn to speechread (lipread), a method of interpreting speech
by “reading” the patterns of a person’s mouth as he or she speaks. Some deaf students
receive cochlear implants, which are receivers surgically implanted behind the ear and
connected to electrodes placed in the cochlea of the inner ear, enabling individuals to
hear sounds to a varying degree.
Gifted children are often moved through the regular school curriculum at a
faster pace than their peers. Some children with exceptionally high ability in a
particular subject area may be allowed to reduce the time they spend in their other
subjects to permit more time to focus on challenging content in their specialty. A high
school student who is particularly gifted in math, for example, may attend advanced
math classes at a local college rather than music classes at the high school. Some
gifted students may also skip grades or they may enter kindergarten, high school, or
college at an early age.

Mercury is the smallest member of the sun's family. It is only 3.100 miles
across. It is also the sun's swiftest planet. Its yearly journey round the sun is only 85
days.
Mercury always keeps one side towards the sun. On this side it is always day,
on the other side always night. We only see the lighted side.
Mercury appears to us like a yellowish orange star. The nearest planet to the
sun, it is always seen near the sun, either just before sunrise or soon after sunset.
People sometimes call mercury the morning star or evening star.
Mercury is half the size of the earth. Because it is much lighter, it has much less
gravity. If you can visit Mercury in a spaceship, you will find it a strange world. Its
low gravity makes you feel very light. If your weight on earth is 100 pounds, your
weight on Mercury is only 27 pounds.
Looking at the sun from Mercury, you can see that it's much more brilliant than
seen from the earth. And the yellow centre of the sun appears three times bigger from
Mercury.
On its lighted side, Mercury's temperature is about 300 degrees centigrate. But
the dark side is extremely cold, about 150 degrees below zero, so mercury is probably
the coldest as well as the hottest of the planets.

A. Read the text and question below. For each question, choose A, B, C or D.
Many studies have shown that children who enjoy music perform better in
school. This doesn’t mean that you have to take a college class in music in order to
help your child appreciate music, but to spend some time talking about, and listening
to a wide variety of music with your child.
If you start when your baby comes home from the hospital, you should spend
some quiet time with your child listening to and enjoying music. Sing along with the
radio because it is important that your child hears your voice, and the music.
When your child can sit in your lap, clap your hands in time to the music,
bounce your knee gently in time to the music. Dance with your child. All of these
activities will help your child develop a sense of rhythm.
Play soothing quiet music at nap time and bedtime. This will help show your
child how music can soothe and be a comfort. When your child is active, play music
with a more pronounced beat, encourage your child to help you choose music that
matches the activities going on.
When your child starts to try and sing a song, encourage them with praise and
don’t worry if they don’t have all the words right. Have some fun and make up your
own words to different songs.
Music is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our unique cultures. Listen to
music from other countries occasionally. Help your child to find the similarities, and
above all, celebrate with music.

There is a cathedral and a university. There are five bridges over the River Tyne,

shopping centers in the world.
A few years ago, the main industries were shipbuilding and coalmining, but

A. Read the text and question below. For each question, choose A, B, C or D.
FEELING SHY
Most people feel shy at some time or another. Shyness comes from being
unsure of yourself. So start to be good to yourself. You can’t always be full of
confidence – nobody is. But you can think about yourself positively. Enjoying
something doesn’t mean that you have to be the best at it. If you start thinking
positively about yourself, you will find that other people see you the same way. If you
can’t find anything positive, talk to a friend. You may find that someone else sees
qualities in you that you might not see in yourself.
If you’re introduced to someone new, be the first to smile and see what
happens. If they don’t return the smile, perhaps it’s because it isn’t only you who’s shy
– maybe so are they. Like everything, it becomes easier with practice, and you’ll find
it gets easier to make the first move.
Rather than thinking about yourself, think about other people, and concentrate
on keeping up with the conversation. Everyone can add something to it and so can
you.

A. Read the text and question below. For each question, choose A, B, C or D.
Ever since humans inhabited the earth, they have made use of various forms of
communication. Generally, this expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the
form of oral speech. When there is a language barrier, communication is accomplished
through sign language in which the motions stand for letters, words and ideas. Tourist,
the deaf, and the mute have had to resort to this form of expression. Many of these
symbols of whole words are very picturesque and exact and can be used
internationally; spelling, however, cannot.
Body language transmits ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either
intentionally or unintentionally. A wink can be a way of flirting or indicating that the
party is only joking. A nod signifies approval, while shaking the head indicates a
negative reaction.
Other forms of nonlinguistic language can be found in Braille (a system of
raised dots read with fingertips), signal flags. Morse code, and smoke signals. Road
maps and picture signs also guide, warn, and instruct people.
While verbalisation is the most common form of language, other systems and
techniques also express human thoughts and feelings.

Along the Eastern coast of Australia is one of the most fascinating areas of the
natural world-the Great Barrier Reef. The Great Barrier Reef is more than 2,000
kilometers long, but isn’t really one long reef. It is actually made up of about 3,000
separate coral reefs.
The Great Barrier Reef is like a large city under the sea filled with many
species of marine life. More than 2,000 species of fish inhabit it. There are also about
400 different species of coral and 500 species of seaweed. The first include several
kind of sharks. The most common one is the black tip reef shark. It gets its name from
the back coloring on the end of its fins.
The black tip shark isn’t a dangerous shark, but there are dangerous animals on
the reef. The tiger shark, for example, is an aggressive shark. There are several kinds of
poisonous jellyfish, and there are poisonous sea snakes, too.Stingrays can injure people
with their sharp are tails. Divers have to be careful on the Great Barrier Reef.
Some animals on the reef are dangerous to people, but people are even more
dangerous to the reef.Agriculture in Australia has caused water pollution, and this has
already killed some areas of the reef. Diver cause damage when they take bits of coral
from the reef, or when they stand on the reef. Unless humans learn to respect and
protect natural treasures like the Great Barrier Reef, these treasures could one day
disappear from the Earth.

A stunt actor’s job looks exciting, but it is often difficult and dangerous. Stunt
actors jump off high building, fall off mountain, get shot, crash cars, or catch on fire.
They need special training to do these stunts safety, and they need good acting skills to
make the stunts look real.
Stunt actors have to know different punches and kicks for stunt fighting. They
have to make the audience believe the fight is a real fight. If they receive a punch or a
kick, they have to make the pain look real
.
Sometimes stunt actors have to fall or jump from very high places. They usually
fall onto an airbag, but while they fall they have to act .For example, may be someone
shoots the character while he is falling. The stunt actor has to pretend he is really in
pain .
Stunt actors often have to do driving stunts like making the car spin around,
turn over, and finally crash. Then they have to run away from the burning car before it
explodes. Fire stunts are very risky. Stunt actors use real fire. Even though they use
fire suits, gloves, powders, and other things to protect themselves during fire stunts,
the flames are still hot. Of course, stunts aren’t real, but they are still risky, Stunt

The World Trade Organization (WTO), founded on January 1st, 1995, aims to
encourage international trade to flow as freely as possible, making sure that trade
agreements are respected and that any disputes can be settled. In the five years since its
founding, the WTO has beecome well known as one of the world’s most powerful
economic organizations, taking its place alongside the World Bank and International
Monetary Fund. The system of global rules for international trade, however, dates
back half a century to 1948 when the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade
(GATT) was formed after World War II. As time went by, it became clear that the
GATT had two major drawbacks  the limited areas of trade it covered, and the lack of
an effective system to settle disputes.
After seven years of trade talks ending in 1994, the socalled Uruguay Round
finally gave birth to the WTO, complete with an effective system to settle disputes and
to form new rules covering trade in services and intellectual property. Even after seven
years of talks and with 22,500 pages of agreements reached, problems remained,
especially in the difficulttodealwith areas of agriculture and services.

SIXTEEN – WHAT NOW?
You’re 16 and finally you can leave school! By now, you’re probably sick of
teachers, desks, tests and exams. But don’t just run for the exit. You need to think
carefully about what to do next.
If you want a professional career, you will need to go to university and get a
degree. To do that, you need to stay at high school for another two years. But you
needn’t stay at the same place. There are several options in the district of Northacre.
St. Leopold’s School has the best pass rate of all the high schools in the district. It
offers a wide range of subjects in the humanities and sciences. St Leopold’s is, of
course, a private school, so may be too expensive for you. But don’t worry, there are
several other options if you want to follow the academic route. Knowle Grammar
School is a state school, so there are no fees, and it has excellent tuition and facilities.
It is a boys’ school from the ages of 11-16, but from 16-18 it is co-educational. But it
is selective, so you’ll have to pass an exam to get in. If you’re interested in going into
Business, check out Wyle River Academy. This school specialises in subjects like
Business Studies, Management and Economics. If you prefer the arts, look at the

courses on offer at Northacre College. Here you can study woodwork, art, textiles and
much more.
Northacre College also offers a wide range of vocational qualifications. You
can do a 1-year certificate or a 2-year diploma in subjects like electrics, plumbing,
roofing and hairdressing. If you’d prefer to work outdoors, look at Milldown College,
where there are courses in Farm Mechanics, Land Management, Animal Management
and much more.
A final option is to get an apprenticeship with a local or national company.
You will get on-the-job training, gain certificates or diplomas and start earning straight
away. But be warned - places are limited! Find out more at the Jobs Fair on 26th May
at Northacre College.

Without a doubt, the most important part of any job application is the resume.
Along with a cover letter, it is the first impression a prospective employee makes on a
potential employer. Therefore, it is important that a resume provide as much relevant
information as possible while remaining brief. A resume shuld be no more than one
full side of a sheet of paper. All too many candidates make the mistake of submitting
several pages which, more often than not, don’t even get a second glance.
A resume must be neatly printed, with at least threequarter inch margins on all
four sides. Use underlining, capital letters and asterisks to highlight important
information. A resume should be singlespace with an extra line between blocks of
information.
Begin a resume with your name, address, and contact information (e.g;
telephone or fax numbers, email address). Do not include age, marital status, or other
personal facts. Next, many resume state the position sought or career goal. Then comes
perhaps the most important part: a chronological outline of work experiencestating
with the most recent job and working backwardsincluding for each position a brief
description of relevant duties and skills used or acquired. Finally, include an outline of
your educational background from the most recent backwards. Make sure to list dates
of completion, full names and locations (if not common knowledge) of schools, and
diplomas or certificates awarded.

It is commonly believed in the United States that school is where people go to
get an education. Nevertheless, it has been said that today children interrupt their
136
New Cutting Edge – ĐH
Department of Foreign Language – HUNRE
education to go to school. The distinction between schooling and education implied by
this remark is important.
Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling.
Education knows no bounds. It can take place anywhere, whether in the shower or in
the job, whether in a kitchen or on a tractor. It includes both the formal learning that
takes place in schools and the whole universe of informal learning. The agents of
education can range from a revered grandparent to the people debating politics on the
radio, from a child to a distinguished scientist. Whereas schooling has a certain
predictability, education quite often produces surprises. A chance conversation with a
stranger may lead a person to discover how little is known of other religions. People
are engaged in education from infancy on. Education, then, is a very broad, inclusive
term. It is a lifelong process, a process that starts long before the start of school, and
one that should be an integral part of one's entire life.
Schooling, on the other hand, is a specific, formalized process, whose general
pattern varies little from one setting to the next. Throughout a country, children arrive
at school at approximately the same time, take assigned seats, are taught by an adult,
use similar textbooks, do homework, take exams, and so on. The slices of reality that
are to be learned, whether they are the alphabet or an understanding of the workings of
government, have usually been limited by the boundaries of the subject being taught.
For example, high school students know that they are not likely to find out in their
classes the truth about political problems in their communities or what the newest
filmmakers are experimenting with. There are definite conditions surrounding the
formalized process of schooling.

IV.READING
A. Read the text and question below. For each question, choose A, B, C or D.
If you were to stop people in the street and ask them to name a ship that had
been sunk, it is likely that nearly all of them would say the Titanic. For the sinking of
the Titanic was, if not the most tragic, certainly the most famous sea disaster in the
history of ocean travel.
The Titanic was built as a luxury liner, intended to be the fastest in the world,
and a great deal of publicity had surrounded it. The last point probably explains why
so many important people from all walks of life were on the boat when it went down.
The Titanic was on its maiden voyage to America in 1912 when it srtuck an iceberg
and sank. Of its 2,300 passengers, more than twothirds were drowned. Because the
Titanic was thought to be virtually unsinkable, no one was prepared for the tragedy.
There was total panic as very few of the passengers had bothered to learn the
necessary drill in the event of trouble. There was severe shortage of lifeboats and those
that were launched were still halfempty. The one point of calm was to be found in the
ballroom where the band carried on playing right to the very end.
What makes the sinking of the Titanic even more tragic is the fact that warnings
of icebergs had been sent, yet the liner was still continuing at full speed. In addition,
one ship was only ten miles away but did not receive the distress signal.
One good thing did, however, result from the disaster. The whole question of safety at
sea was looked into, resulting in much better safety measures, including stricter
lifeboat regulations and the establishment of an iceberg patrol.
