The Goal of the Sussex County Animal Services Division Intake Policy is to ensure animal safety, animal care, and animal welfare and, uphold the Laws and Regulations outlined by the Commonwealth of Virginia and, the Virginia Department of Agriculture. This intake policy intent is to provide care and medical attention (as needed) to all domestic animal within the legal jurisdiction of Sussex County, Virginia. This policy addresses the animal” intake” portion of the daily operation of the Animal Services Division for Sussex County, Virginia. During normal daily operations, the Sussex County Animal Services Division will answer calls for service for all domestic animals, canines and felines. This includes animals that are stray, injured, abandon and, those surrendered by their owner. During rare cases of animal abuse and/or neglect, any animal found under these condition will be evaluated, develop a correction plan and/or seized to ensure their safety and welfare. During a disaster, some livestock could be included along with the domestic animals. Exceptions: This intake policy does not include provisions for wildlife which is the responsibility of the Virginia Department Game and Inland Fishery. Also, this policy does not include snakes and/or exotic reptiles. In the case of snakes and reptiles, our policy instructs our Officers to assist the citizens by calling a local company whom is trained to handle these cases.
