Lit Term Words Plot - A series of related events. Suspense - A moment in a plot that causes you to question what is going to happen next. Conflict - The problem/struggle against two characters. External Conflict - A person or between a character and something. Internal Conflict - When the conflict takes place inside a characters mind. Theme - The central idea or writer’s message. Allegory - A story in which the characters and setting stand for certain people or events. Irony - The difference between what you expect to happen and what actually happens. Allusion - A reference to a person, place, events, things that is know from literature, history, and politics. Point of View - The type of narration used (1st/2nd person). Imagery - Description aimed at the senses. Stereotype – A fixed idea of a character which does not allow for any individually. Simile - A comparison that uses like or as. Personification - Using human characteristics to describe a non-human thing. Flashback - A point in a story that goes back to a previous point in the story. Resolution - The part of the story where the problem is solved. Metaphor - A comparison between two unlike things that does not use like or as. Symbol - A concrete object that represents an abstract idea. Tone - The attitude the writer uses to tell the story. Autobiography - A story about a person’s life written by that person. Satire - Writing that is meant to expose the weakness of a person or group. Foreshadowing - A clue of what is to come in a story.
