Mohammed Elsharif Ms Minnete Tuesday 11 February 2020 Media production What intrigues people when they view an ad? is it the colors, an interesting phrase or the celebrities involved? While these are a portion of the components used in an advertisement we can look further and analyze the persuasive techniques used to make certain ads, they can be classified and ordered in three different types. Pathos, logos, and ethos. Pathos is an appeal to one's emotions, logos appeals to reason, ethos pleads of character and credibility. An example of this would be an ad made to show young people the effects of smoking. The ad urges people the self-harm they cause themselves while smoking. The ad showcases a couple of hands holding a pistol. Rather than bullets, the hands are using cigarettes to load the gun. In big white font “Smoking kills… so why bother starting”. The message the ad is trying to show is clear; don’t smoke. They uses the technique of logos to in lighting their advertisement an example of this in the ad would be that the ad is projecting that smoking resembles holding a loaded gun, Similarly as someone could kill or harm them with a gun they would likewise be jeopardizing their life with cigarettes. The results and medical problems related to smoking can be similarly as destructive as those with a firearm. Therefore the logical reason would be to not smoke cigarettes at all which uses the fundamentals of the logos technique based on the fact that they give you facts on why smoking is a risk to your health.
