Your essay assignment for The Crucible is due on October 7th at 3:30 p.m. Late papers will lose 10% per
day, including weekends, for every day they are late. We will begin working on this essay in the week
before fall break in class.
Your task is to write a five paragraph essay. Your thesis for this essay is, “In The Crucible by Arthur Miller,
character’s name can be described as ___________, ___________, and ____________. You will use
three descriptive words from your list to describe the character. Each descriptive word will have one
body paragraph. In each body paragraph, you must have two quotes from the play. Only one of these
quotes can be from Act 1. You must quote from the play itself, not from the essays by Miller about the
characters included in your book.
Things to consider:
1. Just because a person does something one time does not prove that action is part of his/her
character. That’s why you must have more than one example of the character trait.
2. Each quote should be embedded and have an explanation that convinces the reader (me) that
the quote proves your point.
3. Make sure that the quotes that you have are the strongest and clearest examples of the trait
that you can find.
4. Each quote from the play must be correctly cited, like this, (Miller, page #, line number/s).
5. The title of the play should be capitalized and underlined or italicized every time you use it.
6. Use MLA format, you will lose points if you don’t.
