Sport fishing
Sport fishing methods vary according to the area fished, the species targeted, the personal
strategies of the angler, and the resources available. It ranges from the aristocratic art of fly
fishing elaborated in Great Britain, to the high-tech methods used to chase marlin and tuna.
Sport fishing is usually done with hook, line, rod and reel rather than with nets or other
aids.Among the most common offshore salt water game fish are marlin, tuna, sailfish, shark,
and mackerel.In North America, freshwater
fish include trout, bass, pike, catfish, walleye and muskellunge. The smallest fish are
called panfish, because they can fit whole in a normal cooking pan. Examples
are perch and sunfish (Centrarchidae). In the past, sport fishers, even if they did not eat their
catch, almost always killed them to bring them to shore to be weighed or for preservation as
trophies. In order to protect recreational fisheries sport fishermen now often catch and
release, and sometimes tag and release, which involves fitting the fish with identity tags,
recording vital statistics, and sending a record to a government agency.

Commercial fishing is the activity of catching fish and
other seafood for commercial profit, mostly from wild fisheries. It provides a large
quantity of food to many countries around the earth, but those who practice it as
an industry must often pursue fish far into the ocean under adverse conditions.
Large-scale commercial fishing is also known as industrial fishing. This profession
has gained in popularity with the development of shows such as Deadliest
Catch, Swords, and Wicked Tuna. The major fishing industries are not only owned
by major corporations but by small families as well.[1] The industry has had to
adapt through the years in order to keep earning a profit. A study taken on some
small family-owned commercial fishing companies showed that they adapted to
continue to earn a living but not necessarily make a large profit.[1] It is the
adaptability of the fishermen and their methods that cause some concern for
fishery managers and researchers; they say that for those reasons, the
sustainability of the marine ecosystems could be in danger of being ruined.

Almost any equipment or gear used
for fishing can be called fishing tackle. Some
examples are hooks, lines, sinkers, floats, rods,
reels, baits, lures, spears, nets, gaffs, traps,
waders and tackle boxes. Gear that is attached
to the end of a fishing line
is called terminal tackle.
Freshwater fishing is often ideal for beginning
anglers since it can be enjoyed from shore or
land using a simple tackle set up. Grab your

After you catch a fish, you can do
one of three things: you can throw it
back and let it live another day; you
can take it home and eat it after it's
cleaned and filleted (remove the
intestines, cut off the head and fins,
and cut the meat from the bones).
Or, you can mount the fish on your

Saltwater fishing is a rather generalised term
used in reference to any method of fishing in
the ocean. This applies if you're casting your
line into the waves beneath a pier, fighting a
fish from a kayak, saltwater fly fishing, or trolling
a line behind you on a boat.
