ABSTRACT READING COMPREHENSION AND PERFORMANCE IN ENGLISH OF LEARNERS IN THE INTERMEDIATE LEVEL Marilyn Rodriguez – Enriquez Reading is one of the four necessary important language skills for those learning English as a second or foreign language. Even though reading comprehension provides significant educational implications at present, it is seen that there is a decreasing trend in the general reading level of younger generation. This study aimed to determine the level of reading comprehension and performance in English of pupils in the intermediate level at Tupas Elementary School in Manjuyod District, Division of Negros Oriental for the first semester of School Year 2019-2020. The study variables included sex, parents’ highest educational attainment, average family monthly income and grade level. The areas included in this study were Noting details, Making Inferences, Predicting Outcome and Making Generalizations. The study utilized a pre-validated questionnaire from the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (PHIL-IRI). The result of the study indicated that the Reading Comprehension Level of the respondents were at the Frustration Level. When grouped according to the aforementioned variables, the study revealed that the respondents were on Instructional Level in the area of Noting Details; they were all on Frustration level in the area of Making Inferences, Predicting Outcome and Making Generalizations. The performance of the learners ranged from fairly satisfactory to satisfactory. When grouped and compared according to aforementioned variables, the result showed that reading comprehension level was significant when grouped according to Grade level in the area of Noting details. The rest showed as not significant. Various recommendations were provided in the last chapter of the study.
