This article focuses on how adults over the age of 60 years old can stay fit during the
coronavirus lockdown. The research shows that scientific research suggests that the health
impacts from prolonged home confinement are greatest among older people. When adults of any
age become more inactive, they lose strength and endurance and develop early signs of diabetes
and loss of muscles. Dr. Louise Aronson, a professor of geriatrics and health at the University of
California, San Francisco, and author of “Elderhood: Redefining Aging, Transforming Medicine,
Reimagining life,” states, “I think we’re seeing a slow-motion version of the kind of declines that
usually occur when older people are hospitalized or bedridden.”
The article also looks at some solutions to this arising problem. For one, Dr. Aronson
offered a variety of recommendations about different types and varieties of activities older
people may try to complete in the comfort of their homes, living rooms or even chairs during the
lockdowns to prevent frailty and maintain good health. The article states that regardless of age,
people should move whenever and however possible, using whatever equipment available and
try to build movement into sedentary parts of their day. Dr. James Gladstone, the chief of sports
medicine at Mount Sinai Health Center in New York City, suggests wall squats, requires little
expertise or equipment but improves leg strength. Jennifer Copeland, a professor and director of
the Active Healthy Aging lab at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada suggests using
cans of soup or fluid-filled water bottles provide sufficient resistance for arm curls for upperbody strengthening.
To conclude the article shows that even though people, especially those over 60 years of
age, may not be able to go through their regular exercise routines they can still find ways to keep
active while social distancing at home. It also shows the benefits of exercising whenever
possible to maintain good health by keeping muscles as active as possible.
