(Dr. Jan Loring) “Inanimate object made to move through human effort communicates thought or feeling to an audience”. (Bil Baird) PUPPETEER: 1. a person who operates puppets. PUPPETRY: Puppetry is an education cum entertainment aid in which a doll is dressed as a character in the story and manipulated by the puppeteer. PUPPET CATEGORIES: Puppets are generally categorized by how they are animated. 1. DIRECT Puppeteer has direct contact with the puppet with all or part of his body. Finger puppet A tiny puppet that fits onto a single finger. Glove or hand puppet It is controlled using one hand that occupies the interior of the puppet and moves the puppet around. A "live-hand puppet" is similar to a hand puppet but is larger and requires two puppeteers for each puppet. Arm puppet It usually cover the part or whole arm. Body puppet These are very popular in carnivals, especially Chinese dragons used to celebrate Chinese New Year. Hanimals Human hands or body is painted to represent an animal in the story. Masks A covering for all or part of the face, worn as a disguise, or to amuse or frighten others. 2. INDIRECT Puppeteer controls the puppet through an extension such as rods or strings. rod puppets These puppets are operated with rod by the puppeteer under the stage. shadow puppets A flat human or animal shape fixed to thin sticks. People use shadow puppets for telling a story by moving them in front of a light to make shadows on a screen. 3. REMOTE CONTROL: The puppeteer use the remote control transmitter to control the puppet's every move. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. 4. COMBINATION: This is the combination of hand and rod puppet. Bunraku The puppeteer stands behind the puppet and move the mouth of puppet with one hand and move the hands of puppet by rods. Marionettes These puppets are suspended and operated through strings plus a central rod attached to a control bar held from above puppeteer. ADVANTAGES: Creates interest Gives knowledge in a brief period Effective method Motivates students. DISADVANTAGES: Needs group cooperation and coordination Requires skills in preparation and supply Requires skills in presentation Not easy to carry and operate
