The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
Novel by John Boyne
Yesterday I read the book ‘The boy in the striped
pyjamas ‘.
It is an amazing story of war, friendship, and loss seen
through the innocent eyes of a nine-year old boy called
Bruno.
He is unhappily taken from his lovely home in Berlin and
sent to live with his Commandant father (Nazi officer)
near a concentration camp in Auschwitz, Poland.
As Bruno is young and cannot pronounce certain words,
throughout the novel Hitler is referred to as “the Fury”
(the Führer) and Auschwitz is referred to as “OutWith.”
Bruno is very interested in art and books, and loves
exploring. This is how he discovers a thin, raggedy boy
through the fence to talk and play with, his name is
Shmuel and he is Jewish. Little does he know that that
his and the boy’s groups are sworn enemies for life.
Ultimately Bruno never gets the chance to outgrow his
ignorance and innocence.
I sincerely recommend this awe-inspiring novel.

Last night I read, the boy in striped pyjamas’’, and I couldn’t put it down.
The plot is compelling, and all the horrors of the war are shown through the innocent eyes of a 9
years old, who doesn’t understand what is going on. It’s a story of friendship, compassion and loss.
It is fantastic. I really recommend it.
Version 2
-
How we are complaining about what we have when other people have nothing or a lot less
than us?
-
How the war can unjustly separate friends
-
How doing something mean to the others can turn against you and your family?
-
How adults’ problems can influence us
-
How we do not appreciate what we have until we are losing (after losing Bruno forever
Gretel was dearly missing him)
-
The parents busy with day to day life forget about the children’s feelings and don’t have
time to listen to their fears, concerns, small joys
