The Animal Kingdom KINGDOM ANIMALIA • Kingdom Animalia is divided into TWO major groups: • Invertebrates • Vertebrates What is an ‘animal’? All animals share the following characteristics: • They are multicellular • Have cells with a nucleus, but no cell wall. • Their development includes an ‘embryo’ stage. • They are consumers – they eat other living things. • They can move Invertebrates: • An invertebrate is an animal without a backbone. • About 98% of all animals are invertebrates Invertebrate Groups • There are many different invertebrate groups: • Annelids – earthworms, leeches • Arachnids – spiders, ticks, mites • Cnidarians – jellyfish, sea anemones, corals • Crustaceans – crabs, prawns, lobsters • Echinoderms – starfish, sea urchins • Insects – beetles, flies, butterflies, • Flatworms – tapeworms, flukes • Molluscs – scallops, oysters, clams, snails, octopus, squid • Sponges Vertebrates: • Only about 2% of all animals are vertebrates. • These are animals with backbones and are grouped in the Phylum Chordata. • Vertebrates are divided into FIVE main groups: • Fish • Amphibians • Reptiles • Birds • Mammals How are vertebrates ‘classified’? Vertebrates are classified according to the following characteristics: • Type of birth – live young or eggs • Skin or body covering – hair/fur, scales, feathers, moist skin • Breathing – lungs or gills • Body temperature – warm-blooded or cold-blooded • Live on land or in water Fish • Mostly lay eggs • Are covered in wet scales • Breathe by gills • Are cold-blooded • Live in water Amphibians • Lay eggs • Are covered in moist skin • Young (tadpoles) breathe by gills but adults use lungs • Are cold-blooded • Live in water and on land Reptiles • Mostly lay eggs • Are covered in dry scales • Breathe by lungs • Are cold-blooded • Live in different environments – land & water Birds • Lay eggs • Are covered in feathers • Breathe by lungs • Are warm-blooded • Live in different environments – land, air & water Mammals • Give birth to live young • Are covered in hair or fur • Breathe using lungs • Are warm-blooded • Live in all environments Now it’s time to see what you’ve learnt this week……..DO THE QUIZ!!!
