SERVE INDIA Volume 1, Issue 1 May 2020 COVID 19 - World in Peril WHO, an institution that failed the world and a rogue nation at work By Prof Rohit Ramesh Nehru Gram Bharati (Deemed to be University), Prayagraj Maiden edition of SERVE Newsletter The beginning of a relationship Not long ago Wuhan was a name not many across the globe were familiar with, except those in scientific community and in particular ones concerned with virology as a field of study, for it is the home to Wuhan Institute of Virology. Today however, it is a different story The out-break of a pandemic On January 12, 2020, World Health Organization released a press briefing stating, "The evidence is highly suggestive that the outbreak is associated with exposures in one seafood market in Wuhan. The market was closed on 1 January 2020. At this stage, there is no infection among healthcare workers, and no clear evidence of human-tohuman transmission. The Chinese authorities continue their work of intensive surveillance and follow up measures, as well as further epidemiological investigations". By the editorial team SERVE India Dear Patrons, we on behalf of SERVE India, welcome you all to our maiden edition of newsletter Purpose To us newsletter is a medium of communication to our patrons, volunteers and members. It will also be a compendium to the activities undertaken by SERVE India during the course of the past month. WHO further stated, "it is reassured of the quality of the ongoing investigations and the response measures implemented in Wuhan, and Continued on page 2 INSIDE THIS ISSUE 1,2 1,3 3,4 3 COVID 19, World in Peril Maiden edition of SERVE newsletter SERVE India Covid 19 Aid & Relief Efforts Our plans Newsletter will also offer an opportunity to our esteemed members and volunteers to express their respective opinions and thoughts on issues of importance and to share their experience as members and volunteers of SERVE India, dedicated to the cause of serving the nation. WHO does not recommend any specific health measures for travelers. In case of symptoms suggestive of respiratory illness either during or after travel, travelers are encouraged to seek medical attention and share travel history with their healthcare provider. Travel guidance has been updated. WHO advises against the application of any travel or trade restrictions on China based on the information currently available on this event". WHO further went on to heap praises on China’s response to corona virus for setting a “new global standard” for epidemic control. The truth however is far more complex. China is not like any other country of the world, it is a country ruled by communist ideology, where words like democracy, freedom, free press, secularism, and even rule of law have no meaning at all. On the contrary, these words cannot be a part of even informal discussions. It's a country that does not believe in freedom of information, a country that fiercely enforces censorship of every kind, including information, and it is a country that thrives on an expansionist agenda. It practices an ideology that at its best can only be termed as dangerous. Readers may be compelled to ask the relevance of this write-up in the newsletter of an NGO, and to them I would say that this pandemic, unlike any other has affected almost every living soul on this planet. China is a nation where its scientists are obsessed with viruses and its leaders with secrecy, no matter what the cost. The first reported case of corona virus infection was on 8 December, yet it took Wuhan health authorities more than three weeks to come out with information. New York Times reporters Chris Buckley and Steven Lee Myers have reported that Li Wenliang, the doctor who had warned an online chat group on 30 December of a mysterious illness in the city, but was subsequently forced to sign a police statement that his warning constituted “illegal behaviour”. The Wuhan health authority published a statement on their website that 27 people were affected by pneumonia and that the disease was “preventable and controllable”. Articles and comments about corona virus continue to be deleted online and the government has issued warnings against spreading “rumors”. Thus I ask, was WHO not aware of these characteristics associated with China, or was it some-thing else that blinded them (intentional or other-wise) The scenario that has thus evolved is that of a lifethreatening pandemic, with no end in sight, economies decimated, companies going bankrupt, cities shuttered, schools, colleges, and universities closed, supply chains across countries disrupted, millions unemployed, approximately 5 million infected and 350,000 dead and billions of free individuals under mandatory lock-down. In midst of this pandemonium, China is raking the benefits out of this colossal calamity earning billions by supplying defective test kits, PPEs, ventilators and other hospital supplies and its scientists continue their spree of crazy experiments with viruses at Wuhan. Noted scientist Professor Peter Chumakov Chief researcher at the Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology in Moscow, claimed in an interview, that the picture of the possible creation of the current corona virus is slowly emerging. Scientists at the Wuhan Laboratory, he said, have been actively involved in the development of various corona virus variants for over 10 years. China is and always has been a 'rogue nation' and continues to be one. It is thus imperative that countries across the globe align and hold China accountable for the spread of COVID 19 pandemic. The iron curtain put up by China ought to be brought down and its activities behind those curtains scanned and analyzed. Labs engaged in research on viruses must be thoroughly inspected and truth be bared for all. If not, then we are looking at another pandemic waiting to engulf the globe once again, with wide ranging serious repercussions, because China is not going to stop on its own, disruption, destruction and expansionist agenda is in its DNA. Readers may be compelled to ask the relevance of this write-up in the newsletter of an NGO, and to them I would say that this pandemic, unlike any other has affected almost every living soul on this planet. It has not just killed hundreds of thousands, infected millions and put billions at the risk of infection, it has altered the way of life of human beings, it has not just brought economic disaster, it has destroyed the very fabric of our society. It has not just unemployed hundreds of millions across the planet, it has devastated the future of nations, it has not just affected our today, it has influenced our tomorrow.
