Why is the content of this chapter important to you? How have the principles from the chapter been applied in practice? Chapter Two, How Research Drives Change, is one of the twelve chapters that I found to be extremely helpful as future health care leader. The content that is most important to me, as I prepare to become a manager and hopeful future executive, is realizing that it is paramount that we learn from current research, trials and errors, and best practices implemented by other systems and organizations that are proven to work. Given that fact that we now have access to the Internet, organizations can browse a plethora of information. Examples being resources from the Studer Group, and techniques and proven processes, such as quality and financial management improvement tools, published in material from ACHE, HIMSS, HFMA, and many more. I believe it is important to me that I understand all the material and resources l I have access to, and bring them into use, while also forwarding these resources to my future colleagues so we can bring our organization to the next level. Furthermore, what stood out to me is the application portion of this chapter. Studer mentioned that we should learn best practices and techniques from other industries to further better our own. One example of this is learning from high reliability organizations, such as air travel, nuclear power, and amusement parks, and applying it to health care. Studer mentions “the solution is to relate, not compare.” We must understand the techniques different industries use to improve quality, improve employee retention, and reduce cost. Adopting these best practices from others is how we will learn and grow in health care.
