MEASUREMENT
CONVERSIONS
Common Core Standards: 4.MD.1 & 4.MD.2

I recommend using the following pages as an upfront display for
students while learning the metric prefixes and conversions. The
display uses the pneumonic “King Henry Doesn’t Usually Drink
Chocolate Milk” to help learners remember the order of the metric
pre-fixes. Add in the arrows with multiply/divide by 10 and students
will have metric measurement conversions down in no time!
The following is a desktop version of the metric conversion chart. It
uses the same familiar language as the classroom display. The
student desktop conversion chart comes two to a page. I
recommend laminating these for students. My students like to use
their fingers to count the jumps from one prefix to another,
however some like using dry-erase markers and drawing the
jumps out as well.
“Find Someone Who…” is a great way for students to practice
metric conversions. This game gets students up and moving while
solving the conversions. Every student is instantly motivated by the
prospect of winning a game! In this game, there are no turns or
outs, so all students are always engaged. Students cannot answer
the same question more than twice throughout the game, this
ensures that students are giving all conversion types a go! I also
tell my students that they cannot sign more than one (or two,
depending on how many students are present) box on another
persons paper.
Conversion Land takes metric conversions one step further! This
game follows a typical board game, however all students must
solve all equations-again no turns or outs. Complete student
engagement through the entire game! There are 40 game cards
that are a mix of basic conversions along with some more difficult
word problems. You can play the game with the included game
board, or any other game board template. I recommend printing
the student directions, game board, and game cards all on the
same color paper but keep different game sets on different
colors. This helps to know which pieces belong to which set,
because we all know that a piece will inevitably get misplaced! ;)
