Activities for “ A Martian Sends a Postcard Home”
Instructions:
A. Read the poem “A Martian Sends a Postcard Home” by Craig Raine.
B. In the poem the Martian tries to explain eight of the things it has seen on Earth. Write and illustrate the
things it describes, and the numbers ( 1- 17) of the verses.
Example.
1.
( Verses 1-3
Caxtons are mechanical birds with many
and some are treasured for their markings –
they cause the eyes to melt or the body to shriek without pain.
I have never seen one fly, but sometimes they perch on the hand.
2. Mist is when the sky is tired of flight and rests
its soft machine on ground: then the world is dim and bookish
like engravings under tissue paper.
(
3.
Rain is when the earth is television.
It has the property of making colours darker.
(
4. Model T is a room with the lock inside –
)
Verse 4-5
)
Verse 6
)
( Verse 7-8
)
a key is turned to free the world for movement,
so quick there is a film to watch for anything missed.
5.
But time is tied to the wrist
or kept in a box ticking with impatience
(
6.
Verse 9
In homes, a haunted apparatus sleeps,
( Verse
that snores when you pick it up.
If the ghost cries, they carry it to their lips and soothe it to sleep with sounds.
And yet, they wake it up deliberately, by tickling with a finger.
7. Only the young are allowed to suffer openly.
Adults go to a punishment room with water but nothing to eat.
They lock the door and suffer the noises alone.
No one is exempt and everyone’s pain has a different smell.
8. At night, when all the colours die,they hide in pairs
and read about themselves –
in colour, with their eyelids shut.
(
)
10-12
)
Verse 13-15
)
( Verse 16-17
)
C. Translate these actions and things into “normal” English:
1. The eyes melt - It can mean what you are looking at is so attractive OR so terrible.
2. Shriek without pain - humans' emotional response when they read books.
3. The lock inside - a demonstration in which protestors lock themselves inside a building, factory, etc.
4. The ghost cries – Their life and/or death is usually filled with pain and plagued with fear.
5. Tickling with a finger - The act of using your fingers with the intent to seduce someone.
6. They hide in pair - A Hidden Pair is basically just a “buried” Naked Pair.
D. Write and Illustrate your own Martian Postcard. Think of an unusual everyday item and write a couple of
sentences describing it without mentioning its actual name.
