Learning Objectives:

 demonstrate and express their understanding of key literary elements.

Pre-class Task for Students:

Once a student has enrolled in this course, the assistant teacher should have them:

Read chapters 1 & 2.

 Look up words they don’t understand in a dictionary or internet.

Preview the key vocabulary (A).

Complete grammar exercises. Answers will be reviewed in-class.

Preview the reading comprehension exercises (B). Some of the questions will be used as writing samples and prompts in-class.

Search for pictures of the vocabulary words on Google to give student a visual impression.

(B) Grammar Exercises: Gerunds (“ing” verbs)

A gerund is a verb with an –ing ending. It can do different things in sentences.

Examples: coming rumbling crouching deafening

To make a gerund, you can add -ING to most verbs EXCEPT verbs that end in E like come. Then we need to remove the E first THEN add –ING

Exercise 1: Underline the gerunds (ING ending) in the sentences.
