Chapter 7 of the Cheesebro et. al. textbook discusses several benefits that can result when you are faced with an interpersonal conflict. Describe an interpersonal conflict you have experienced and explain which of these benefits occurred as you attempted to resolve the conflict. According to Chapter 7 of the Cheesebro et. al. textbook, there are types of conflicts: pseudo/fact/ego/value/need conflict. From my experience, lately, I have gotten involved in the ego conflict with my teammate in the Business Communication course. Back then, we were assigned to create an ecommerce website and my teammate was in charge of designing its interface. When he sent out the result, I pointed out quite a lot of points needing alternation. After noticing that he was quite upset and offended, I decided to ask him what he was feeling and why he was feeling so. Having understood his concern, I get straight to the point that I was just trying to produce the best possible performance and all the errors that I had mentioned had nothing to do with me trying to degrade his efforts and ego. After that, since both parties got to understand each other’s motive, which means that the conflict was handled, both our relationship and group work were consolidated, leading to a better corporation in our latest assignment. 2. Your college/university is preparing a brochure to persuade prospective students to enroll. The school doesn’t want to invest a lot of money in full-scale document testing. What free or almost-free things could it do to make the document as effective as possible? ● Apply the PAIBOC model to analyze the key information that should be put on the brochure, increasing the integrity and clarity on what they will receive for the audience, particularly, the students (Kevin, 2017) ● Review the former brochures to filter out the pros and cons, thus, increasing chances making effective changes to the new one. ● Focus on the condensity, clarity and identity in the design: choose the color and paper quality to match the university identity, use simple language (employ the SMOG conversion chart, readability formula,...), put emphasis on the headline, use less than 3 fonts, add call-to-action, prioritize high resolution pictures over texts (Igor Ovsyannykov, 2020) 3. List three reasons why verbal and visual supports are important. ● Help audience easily depict, understand and keep track of the presented information ● Make the information more reliable ● Help both providers and audience review the presented information PORTFOLIO REFLECTION: ● Evaluate Significance After learning this session, I know how to choose the most appropriate type of handling conflict based on the type conflict taking place. Besides, I also know how to design certain types of documents, which should be focused in presentation slides through verbal and visual supports. ● Reconstruct the experience The most salient point is conflict resolution because it helps with my handling conflicts in team working ● Analysis: 2 Since the teachers provide us with detailed examples of the agenda instead of hammering on theory. Moreover, they also organize a lot of activities to encourage everybody apply the knowledge that have been mentioned ● Distil: In the future, I will use what I have learnt to construct an appropriate email and adjust the design of the presentation slides. Moreover, as I have said, I now know how to flexibly change the conflict management style to match with the context and my purpose.
