Questions 28-37: Underline the indefinite pronouns in the following paragraph. (10 total)
For a few centuries, no one believed that rhinoceroses still existed. However, recently they have been
observed and studied. In fact, many have seen a rhinoceros in the zoo, but most of the free rhinoceroses live in
South Africa and southeastern Asia. Few realize that the rhinoceros is a gentle animal unless viciously
provoked. However, a full-grown rhinoceros can kill an elephant or a leopard. Each of the baby rhinoceroses
takes over two years to fully develop. In fact, after two years, some are only half the size of their parents. All
have large nasal horns. The front horn is usually much larger than the rear one. Several of the doctors in ancient
times believed the rhinoceros’s horn held magical powers. For this reason the animals were hunted and almost
totally destroyed by man. Today the rhinoceros is protected by hunting laws. Something needs to be done about
the decreasing number of rhinoceroses.
Recognizing Pronouns
Questions 38-52: Underline all of the pronouns (personal, demonstrative, interrogative, reflexive,
intensive, and indefinite) in the following paragraph. (15 total)
What are the largest land mammals in the world? No land animal is larger than the elephant. In fact,
some of the larger elephants can weigh up to twelve thousand pounds. However, despite the elephant’s bulk,
most eat only grasses and leaves. The average height of an elephant’s shoulders is eleven feet, and its tusks
grow up to eleven feet as well. Many use their tusks for foraging for food and for protection from enemies. Each
of the tusks is made of ivory. This makes elephants a valuable catch for poachers. Elephants also have long
trunks. The trunk is the elephant’s nose and upper lip. It is used for breathing, smelling, eating, and drinking. A
mother elephant stays with her calf for several years after it is born. A female calf stays with her mother until
the mother dies, but a male calf goes off on his own after the first few years. The elephant itself is an extremely
intelligent creature, and some are even trained to help man accomplish certain tasks.
