Personification: the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something
nonhuman, or the representation of an abstract quality on human form
Example: “Her heart was divided between concern for her sister, and resentment against all
others.” - Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Function: Jane Austen is personifying the character’s heart to make what she is saying have
more feeling and have more sentiment to the readers.
