PROJECT: CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS IN MY WORLD
Date Assigned: Wednesday, November 13
Date Due: Thursday, November 21
OBJECTIVE: Students will become better acquainted with the writing and naming of chemical compounds
and the use of chemicals in everyday life in foods and products that are used in the home.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Neatly cut out a minimum of 10 original labels (no photocopies or downloaded pictures) from foods
and products you use every day. The label should be clearly legible and must include the ingredient
list and the name of the product.
2. You may use any food product and/or any of the following that includes an ingredient list:
a. medicines (this includes vitamins)
e. gardening/home improvement
b. pet products
products
c. toiletries/personal hygiene
f. drinks (including dry mixes)
products
g. slim fast or diet food labels
d. cleaning products
h. candies/snacks
3. Mount and number each label neatly and securely on a clean sheet of paper. Warning, staples tend to
tear the paper and snag on other pages so should be used with caution.
4. From the minimum 10 labels you must find at least 20 different chemical compounds whose name
follows the rules that you have learned so that that you can identify the type of compound.
a. You will write the chemical names as given and then the chemical formulas derived using the
rules from our notes and textbook.
b. Compounds should be on the same page as the label they were taken from.
c. Please underline, circle, or highlight the name of each compound on its source label if possible.
5. Some companies provide ambiguous or unconventional chemical names to protect trade secrets. If
you choose to use these compounds, you must provide each possible standard way of naming and
writing these chemical formulas.
Example:
:
AND
Tin chloride would be written as:
Tin (II) chloride / Stannous chloride
Tin (IV) chloride / Stannic chloride
SnCl2
SnCl4
6. There will be links on Schoology to use when checking the accuracy of your formulas. Warning,
Google is likely to make mistakes on complex compound formulas or names!
7. Number the chemical compounds sequentially from 1 to 20. Do not restart numbering with a new
label.
8. Any duplication of compounds will not be counted and if there are more than three duplicates in the
project, then there will be a 5-point penalty.
9. After a compound formula and name, identify each compound as ionic, covalent, or an acid.
10. Place all papers securely in a folder or small ring binder.
11. Loose pages or labels, or papers in page protectors will not be accepted!
12. Include a decorated cover page with a title, your name, date, and period (5 points).
13. Include a table of contents that gives the name/brand of each product label and the page where the
label is located.
14. You will be graded on accuracy and neatness.
15. LATE projects will NOT BE ACCEPTED! If you are deathly ill, get someone to bring your project to
school.
16. The project will count as a MAJOR TEST GRADE!
17. If the entire project is typed correctly (especially subscripts!) you will receive 5 bonus points.
18. If the entire project is creatively/meaningfully decorated, you might receive up to 5 bonus points.
WARNING! ANY FORM OR AMOUNT OF ACADEMIC DISHONESTY WILL
RESULT IN A ZERO WITH NO CHANCE TO REDO OR MAKE-UP!
