Can you answer these Questions for me?
How was the
Universe Created?
What is a person’s
purpose in both
life and on this
Earth?
Who or what
made humans?
Is there anything
after life? What
happens when we
die?
What is the point
of anything
Is there anything

Man has tried since the beginning of time to answer these
questions.
But they are UNANSWERABLE.
Why?
Because humans have not found an answer that is 100%
proven beyond any doubt.
There have been two major competitors trying to
convince people their way is the RIGHT way to find the
answers.
Who has been trying to find Man’s most desired answers???
5
6
What was the name of the
MOVEMENT that stressed reason
and thought and power of
individuals to solve problems and
answer questions?
THE
ENLIGHTENMENT
7
8
Would you rather:
a. Live in a world
where religion
always had the
answer, no
questions asked?
Or:
b. Live in a
world where
science always
had the answer
no questions
asked?
Who Answered the Questions?
Religion
• Religious leaders: Pope, bishops,
priests, etc.
Science
• Scientists, philosophers, writers,
artists, and other Educated Men
9
How were the Questions Answered?
Religion
• Consulting religious texts,
scripture, prayer and tradition
Science
• Observation, Scientific
Process, Experiments
10
Where would People Meet to
discuss these Questions?
•
Church
If you wanted RELIGIOUS answers, you
should go to one of these places:
A Religious University
The Vatican
11
Where would People Meet to
discuss these Questions?
•
12
If you wanted SCIENTIFIC answers, you
should go to one of these:
A SALON: a place where like-minded
people (usually men) could gather to
talk about new ideas and theories.
Salons began in Paris, France, and
were hosted by wealthy women in
their parlors, serving refreshments
such as tea and biscuits.
So… What was the Difference?
•
Enlightenment Thinkers (called Philosophes)
began questioning long-standing Religious beliefs
and traditions
•
Enlightenment Thinkers began to believe that
humans could be changed and improved by being
guided by reason
13
Major Ideas of the Enlightenment:
Old Idea VS. New Idea
Old Idea:
New Idea:
• Monarchs have absolute power • The government only has power
• The church rule everywhere
if the people says it does
the Monarch does not
• Miracles and unexplained
• If something does not have a
phenomenon can be solved
•
•
clear, easily explained reason
for it, it is caused by God and
cannot be understood by man
The People have no choice but
to obey the laws put forth by
the Church and their Monarch
Never question the Church or
your Monarch
•
through logical thinking and
the scientific process
Questioning one’s beliefs
(including the Church) and
criticizing or questioning one’s
Monarch is a right all people
have.
14
15
How well do you
think the ”New” way
of thinking went
over with the
Church?
What about the
Monarchs?
Even though the
Enlightenment was all about
challenging long-standing ideas
about how things were done
and what was believed, there
were a few “MAJOR” Ideas to

teenager and young adult on the planet all began to
boycott and refuse to use any form of Social Media,
refused to use any form of Instant Messaging (Texting),
and began reading some obscure (not-popular) Newspaper
instead of getting their news or information from the
Internet?
