SO2 is a colorless gas with a strong “rotten
eggs” odor.
 SO2is a gas formed when sulfur is exposed
to oxygen at high temperatures during
 fossil fuel combustion,
 oil refining, or
 metal smelting.
 Once in the atmosphere, it can be further
oxidized to SO3.
 SO3reacts with water vapor or dissolves in
water droplets to form H2SO4.

