Division of City Schools Manila Mariano Marcos Memorial High School Contextualized Reseach In Empowerment Technologies Submitted by: Jonathan F, Garzo Jr. STEM-11 Submitted to: Mrs. De Belen Introduction This study is about gaming addiction particularly on online game. This study covers the addiction on online games today and yesterday. Now let us talk about online game. The history of online games dates back to the early days of pocket-based computer networking in the 1970’s. An early example of online game are MUD, including the first MUD1, which was created in 1978 and originally confined to an internal network before becoming connected to ARPANET in 1980. Commercial games followed in the next decade, with Islands of Kesmai, the first commercial online role-playing game, debuting in the 1984, as well as more graphical games such as MSX LINKKS action games in 1986, the flight simulator Air Warrior in 1987, and the Famicom Modems online go game in 1987. The rapid availability of the internet in the 1990’s led to an expansion of online games, with notable titles including Nexus:The Kingdom of the Winds(1996), Quakeworld(1996),Ultima Online(1997)Lineage(1998), Counter Strike(1999) and Ever Quest (1999). Video game consoles also began to receive online networking features asuch as the Famicom Modem(1987), Sega Maganet(1990, Stellaview(1995), Seganet(1996), Playstation 2(2000) and Xbox(2001). Following improvements in connection speeds more recent developments include< the popularization of new games, and new platforms, such as mobile games.(All of this information was obtained by the help of Wikipedia) Now let us go even further and explore Online game genres. First person shooter game(FPS) during the 1990’s, online games started to move from a wide variety of LAN protocols(such as IPX) and onto the internet using the TCP/IP/ protocol. Doom popularized the concept of death match where multiple players battle each other head-to-head, as a new form of online game. Since Doom, many FPS games contain online components to allow death match or arena style play. Next on the list is Multiple online battle arena game(MOBA). A specific sub genre of strategy video games referred to as MOBA gained popularity in the 2010’s as a form of electronic sports, encompassing games such as Defense of the Ancients(DOTA) mod for Warcraft 3, its valvedeveloped sequel DOTA 2, League of Legends (LOL), Heroes of the Storm and smite. This is but a fraction of the online game genre for more answers go to https//en.mwikipedia.org. Now that I’ve introduced you to the online game world let us explore the online game industry. In the gaming industry there us something called the online game governance where online gamers must agree to an end-user license agreement(EULA)when they first install the game application or an update. EULA is a legal contract between the producer or distributor and the end-user of an application or software, which is to prevent the program from being copied, redistributed or hacked. The consequences of breaking the agreement vary according to termination or direct termination without warning. Recent development of gaming governance requires all video games(including online games) to hold a rating label. The voluntary rating system was established by the Entertainment Software Rating Board(ESRB. A scale can range from E(stands for everyone) and adults, to M(stands for mature) recommending games that are restricted to age above 17. Some explicit online game can be rated AO(stands for Adult Only), identifying games that have content suitable for only adults over the age of 18. Furthermore, online games must also carry on ESRB notice that warns that any online interactions are not rated by the ESRB. Now we are going to enter the world of the games. As shown earlier an online game can be any genre either MOBA or FPS or RTS or MMO or Console, Browser MUD and many more. In certain games there is a specific rule or law to follow for example if you play Counter Strike you could be a terrorist or a police, the police and terrorist have many forms like guirella, swat, special force etc. You have to shoot your way until the last team is standing. In the world of GTA V you could roam anywhere in the map, kill steal and do whatever you like, you could also take missions for you to be able to earn some money. In the world of Injustice 2 you are gonna battle one on one with some of the most Iconic faces of the Justice League given their own skills, gadgets and powers. In the COC you are basically going to defend and attack if the attack was successful you should be able to earn massive loots. In the NBA world you will play like you favorite NBA star. One could pass, shoot and block. You could customize your own character and make it as you own. In minecraft you are the master of your own world you create anything out of blocks literally blocks. This contextualized research is about Online Gaming: The addiction and the cause and effects specifically this seeks to answer the following questions: 1. What makes online gaming addictive? 2. What are the causes of online gaming addiction among the youth? 3. What are the effects of online gaming addiction? Different Literatures and Studies Foreign Literature/Studies As a researcher about online game addiction I can refer to some books and researches of the same topic. According to Ace McCloud, “online game is fun! There’s no doubt about it.” This statement may suggest why online gaming is so addictive, another theory suggests that the built in reward system for online games make them addictive. Each and everyone of us has their own reason to why they are addicted to some things, but we can’t ignore the factors that may be a significant reason for us to be addicted. Online game addiction fun as stated by Mr. McCloud but in an article of Mez Breeze another story is told, this particular addiction is compared to neurological reaction committed by gambling addiction, this can be found in the article of Mr. Breeze too. The American Psychiatric Association decided that not enough evidence exists to why as video game addiction is a potential disorder. However, the next year they revised decision and concluded that potential disorder is present at video games This kind of changes proves that the addictive nature of online games are climbing the charts. We can’t really stop video game addicts from their addiction because it’s their only escape from the real world, in the real world, they can’t really attain confidence, attention, and friends on the online game world, they could get all of that. But not all that makes you happy can stay by your side. Thousands of incidents showed that many people have died because of too much computer exposure. The BBC news reported an incident where a 28-year old Korean died for playing 50 hours with only few breaks. Adult can be prove to online game addiction too, a well-known example is Ryan Van Cleave a University professor whose life changed when he became involved in online gaming If we will look closely, online game addiction seems bad but if we look on the other side they tell a different story, let’s say that your child is addicted in reading, would you consider it bad? I think not. We have our own reasons, so do online gamers. Some gamers admitted that they play online game or became addicted to it. It is because it helps them to escape the real world, escape from stress and problems that they may encounter. We should consider they growing economy or industry of E-sports also known as electronic sports it is a form of competition using videogames. It is also a form of entertainment , some tournament pool have been done with Tekken but it was just for amateurs, the late 2000’s changed it all though this time is the time of E-sports. With the help of the internet E-sports rise into popularity, pro gamers were given a chance to play and earn money, this is what exactly happened. Lee Sang Hyeok of South Korea is a League of Legends pro gamer and said to be the best player to ever play the game, as the top ranking player you can’t stop wondering how much he earns from playing right? Lee also known as “faker” have been reported to have signed a contract worth 2.5 million dollar, to this being said, to be like faker who can play their favorite game and earn millions. We can argue all day about the problems of online game addiction but we can’t deny that players in their respective rights have their own reasons that they believe into, it is a reason to be accepted and respected. Now we will find out if they have. According to Mr. Eriqa, “computer games are stress relievers” it also stated that computer games can help you make friends or even online romance. That being said, we could compare the statements of online gamers from gamespot.com it is quite similar. Now, let us look at how it is not a good thing according to a Filipino. Some say that online game is another way of promoting violence to the youth, it is quite tru for GTA, LOL, DOTA, CS:GO, CF and many more games, these games requires you to kill your enemies to win and earn money. In the year 2010 over 114 million around the globe admits that they play online games but most of them were Asians, in the Philippines alone the majority of players are teenagers ranging from high schools, colleges, and even elementary students are hooked up to online gaming. The Philippines is a country of very respectful citizens but it is not free from addiction. In October 2006, a Cebu journalist followed the story of an 18-year old science students who became addicted to Ragnarok, he failed his class and eventually lost contact with his friends.
