All rights reserved. For internal use only | US - LS Excellence in Holiday It’s the most wonderful time of the year! As the year winds down, planning for Holiday is a great time to reflect on the successes and opportunities experienced in the past several months. Consider the way you have embraced the focus on operational excellence. Did you achieve your goals? What wins can you applaud? Before you roll up your flannels and begin to deck the halls, take a moment to reflect and celebrate any accomplishments. Thank you for all you do. This holiday, to help achieve operational excellence and nurture the human spirit, your planning period introduces fewer updates to operations and creates space for you to practice and sustain new behaviors. Since Spring, you’ve been doing a lot of heavy lifting (Barista Approach, Daily Operations Approach, Deployment, Steps to Excellence and the Ops Excellence Field Guide...whew!). For Holiday, continue practicing with these new approaches and tools, share your learnings with your Starbucks DM, and if you’re going to do any heavy lifting, let it be of your customers’ holiday spirits! 3 September 11, 2018 2:10 PM © Starbucks Coffee Company. Here are some things to keep in mind when working with the Steps to Excellence: • An update to the knowledge base, Steps to Excellence clarifies the behaviors, standards and tools required to be your best at that work. ¶ Currently this shows how to be excellent at Staffing & Scheduling your store ¶ Coming soon! How to be excellent at your Sales & Inventory work • When challenges are discovered, or standards are not being met, Steps to Excellence can be used as a checklist to quickly diagnose where a step along the way was missed, leading to the less than successful moment you’ve observed. If the cake doesn’t taste right, check the recipe. Maybe an ingredient was missed. Steps to Excellence is literally your recipe for success. Whatever your approach to excellence is, share your goals with your leaders and team so that we can go far together. 4 September 11, 2018 2:10 PM © Starbucks Coffee Company. All rights reserved. As we adjust the approach to achieving cleanliness and safety goals, we are also evolving the way we measure performance. Audits in stores (frequency, reporting and content) will change. Food safety, cleanliness and facilities standards are not changing. Food Safety Assessment What to expect: • The new audit will focus on food safety, in fact, it is now called the Food Safety Assessment • Frequency of your store’s audits will be based on your store’s support level (low, medium, high), determined by a variety of risk factors ¶ Being categorized as high-support does not mean your store is not foodsafe; a store’s support level is determined by a variety of risk factors e.g. higher volume locations are considered higher risk because they serve more customers • Stores should expect one to four audits per Starbucks fiscal year (October-September) DM • The assessment is organized by food safety categories and highlights individual items by criticality (critical, major and minor findings) and includes space to document a plan to close any standards gaps ¶ Review the new Food Safety Assessment which will post on StoreLink in late September ¶ The auditor may provide limited coaching and direction based on findings ¶ The assessment will not have a score; the goal is zero critical food safety findings DM ACTIVITY SM SM ACTIVITY ¶ Review the new Food Safety Assessment which will post on StoreLink in late September ¶ There is no longer a pass/fail threshold for assessments ¶ What gaps in knowledge or skill could be closed? It is vital to the success of your store that every barista is committed to food safety. Empower your team to continue self-calibration through the new Self Assessment form on StoreLink and the Clean, Safe and Ready program to help your store safely serve customers. ¶ Where is your team excelling? In Fall, baristas focused on being present to create a sense of warmth and belonging where everyone is welcome. When baristas are welcoming, they create the Starbucks Experience for customers and each other. During the holidays, when life can get hectic, it’s even more important to remember to be open hearted, connect and take the time to understand your customers’ needs. Whether they are a twice-a-day regular or a new customer looking for a special treat, everyone who visits your store should leave feeling good about their visit, and the moments they shared with you. This Holiday, be present and connect with compassion to make the moment right for every customer that walks through your doors. LVM, DM & SM ACTIVITY - TOGETHER DM ¶ Reference Ops Excellence Field Guide - Licensed Stores page 16, Barista Approach, Be Committed to Customers • Observe baristas in role SM • Leverage the Barista Approach and the Generates Insights questions to gain clarity on the store team’s path to creating the best moment in every customer’s day • Celebrate successes and address gaps to standard 6 September 11, 2018 2:10 PM © Starbucks Coffee Company. For some of our customers, the holiday season is a challenging time. Taking a moment to give an #extrashotofgood can turn one of the darkest times of the year into a festival of lights for everyone. SM SM ACTIVITY ¶ Support your baristas who want to participate in community events through thoughtful scheduling when possible ¶ Consider scheduling a community event with a local organization ¶ Use starbucks.volunteermatch.org to register your event or sign up for an already registered event as a way to give back to the communities that give so much to us Staffing & Scheduling for Success in Holiday The increase in customer traffic that comes with the holiday season requires careful planning to ensure that this time of year is magical for both customers and baristas. SM SM ACTIVITY ¶ Connect with your baristas about their plans for the season ¶ Review community events in your area to determine potential impact ¶ Follow Siren's Eye guidelines to post all holiday operating hours 7 Inventory Readiness for Holiday During the holiday season, many stores will see an increase in sales of retail merchandise, Starbucks Cards and At Home Coffee. Starbucks sells more Christmas Blend than any other coffee all year! With customers looking for fun gifts for family and friends, more than one third of merchandise sales are made during Holiday and most of those purchases occur after 2 p.m. Use the inventory planning information below to help set your store up for success during Holiday. Holiday Deliveries FEATURE 2 Holiday Set On 11/1, baristas all over the U.S. and Canada will be setting up for Holiday in their stores! While completing the set after close of business is recommended, partner with your leader to determine the best plan for your location and share your plan with your Starbucks district manager. Refer to Step 2 of the Starbucks manager Steps to Excellence - Scheduling on StoreLink for additional support for writing an effective schedule. The Holiday Launch Set-up Scheduling Tool has been updated for Holiday to provide guidance on your store-specific needs for the set including prep and clean up. If possible, consider scheduling more baristas or shorter shifts to keep energy high and the holiday spirit abundant. The best way to prepare for Holiday deliveries is to have a strong plan and communicate it to the leaders in your store. You will receive a separate Holiday pallet on your regular delivery day between 10/15 – 10/30. This pallet will include seasonal merchandise, At Home Coffee, Holiday cups, sleeves and a gifting podium. All Holiday beverage components will arrive with your regular order in time for training. No Peeking As in years past, the merchandise boxes will have a "No Peeking" sticker on them. This sticker is a visual cue for customers in the event that your order is too large for back of house storage. If this is the case, please ensure that you do not block bathrooms, exits or the customer path. While your Holiday products are not for customers’ eyes before launch, peeking for baristas is highly encouraged! Unboxing and staging merchandise based on your store-specific fixtures is a great way to reduce the time spent completing the Holiday set. o N ing eek P 8 September 11, 2018 2:10 PM © Starbucks Coffee Company.
