Partner institutions whose main language of instruction is not French must
ensure that all students planning to enrol in courses taught in
French at ESG have intermediate level spoken and written French. This
knowledge of French should be sufficient to enable the student to obtain
a minimum score of 605 on the Test de français international (TFI) equivalent to
the B2 level (Upper Intermediate) of the Common European
Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). This minimum score is presented
as a guide.
Although no specific test is required, a certificate
attesting to the student’s French language skills (oral and written) must be
provided by a competent authority.
You need a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4 point scale) and had to have completed
4 semesters in an Engineering program by the time the exchange program starts
if you wish to take courses in our Faculty of Engineering.

Living on‐campus is a central part of experiencing an exchange student’s life at a
residential liberal arts college and is a REQUIRED part of Macalester’s exchange
program. All admitted incoming exchange students are guaranteed placement in
on‐campus housing.
In accordance with new J‐1 visa requirements, MICA now requires proof of
English language proficiency (if your native language is not English). MICA
requires a score result on The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) of at
least 550 PBT (paper based test), or equivalent 213 CBT (computer‐based test),
or 80 IBT (internet based test). MICA also accepts a band score of at least 6.5 on
the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
