Rat Dissection
To Start
• Find a partner
• Get a rat and dissection tray
• Write you name on your bag
• When we clean up rinse the tray and instruments
• Your rat is closed up tightly with no air in the zip-lock bag.
External Anatomy
• Examine the rat.
• Ears
• Teeth
• Nose
• Feet
• Toes
• Tail
• Is it male or female
Skinning Procedure
• Lay rat on its dorsal surface.
• Make incisions according to diagram
• Insert probe and lift at the end of
incision opening.
• Use probe to gently separate the
underside of skin from the muscle
layer.
• Use scissors to cut only free skin do
not damage muscle.
• Cut skin around the ankle region of
the arms and legs.
• Cut skin around the head.
• Flip rat over and skin the back.
