5.3 220 l BAG FILLING IN METALLIC DRUM
For 220 l aseptic bag filling in drum it is necessary to:
-
-
control phase:
1. visually check every bag;
2. ensure that there are no sharp edges on the internal surface of the drum that could cut
the bag during its insertion or transport.
Bag positioning phase: this is a very delicate stage, and must be carried out with particular
care:
1. before inserting the spout in the aseptic bag, fold the first 90 – 100 mm of the bag and
then fix the bag’s corners at the clamps. These precautions avoid creating tension in
the spout area during filling, which could break the layers;
2. center the aseptic bag with the base of the drum;
3. totally open the bag, positioning it carefully in the drum, so as to be correctly placed
against the drum during filling.
220 l BAG POSITIONING – THE GLAND AREA MUST NOT BE
UNDER TENSION
-
Filling phase:
1. during the first step of filling, the bag must not be in contact with the bottom of the
drum, but 2 cm away from it. During this step do not move either the drum or the filling
chamber, until the product has reached the bottom of the bag, opening it completely.
The presence of folds could lead to a reduction of the usable volume, and consequently
to excessive tension or breakage during the final filling phase;
2. during the next filling steps and the chamber descent, avoid the development of
tension in the gland area and allow the drum to support the bag. The bag corners must
not be released until the final part of the cycle.

Post filling phase:
1. checked if the cap is correctly closed: do not try to open it again, especially when it is
hot;
2. if a biocide was used, the external surface should be cleaned and dried;
3. carefully fold the empty edges of the aseptic bag toward the center part without
superimposing them on the spout;
4. during closure, do not trap the aseptic bag between the drum and its cover. If bag
blocking is carried out immediately: see paragraph 7.1..
