GLASGOW CALEDONIAN UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING & BUILT ENVIRONMENT BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING PROJECT PROPOSAL, SEMESTER A, SESSION ………… PROJECT TITLE Design & Analysis of a Piston for High Performance Engines PROJECT AIM The aim of this project is to create and analyse a piston made from a composite material which has superior mechanical properties and then compare this to a standard piston. During the project I hope to show with appropriate testing that the composite piston gives improved results when loaded and outline why this material would be a more suitable candidate for use within high performance engines. Experimental/Test/Analysis [2] GLASGOW CALEDONIAN UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING & BUILT ENVIRONMENT BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING PROJECT PROPOSAL PROJECT ACTIVITY BAR CHART / GANTT CHART. INTRODUCTION/DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT: Although there have been huge strides made in the development of electric vehicles the standard internal combustion engine shall remain in use for many years to come. Within these engines a piston is a vital component which is responsible for converting energy from the expanding gas within the combustion chamber into a mechanical force which can be transferred to the crankshaft. This project aims to prove, with relevant testing, that there are a number of benefits to manufacturing a piston out of a composite material. A finite element analysis (FEA) shall be completed on ANSYS using a 3D model of a piston, looking closely at important values such as the Von Mises stress, deflection and temperature distribution. These results will be compared to a standard piston material and will determine which is most suitable for use within high performance engines. [3] [4]
