Topographic Map Drawing
You have purchased an island in the Pacific Ocean. Your job is to construct a topographic map of this
location. This island must have a name. If you would like, you can make it a themed island, living
community, theme park or whatever you choose. Attach this to the back of your newly created map.
The map MUST contain a legend (key) and a labeled contour interval, and colored contours.
Your map MUST also include the following (at minimum):

Contour lines are CLOSED (remember – this is an ISLAND) and range from 0 to at LEAST 300m
A constant contour interval( 20-50 meters)
At least two mountains
At least one depression
At least one river
A body of water (lake)
A least 3 buildings of any kind, your choice
9. A minimum of one major highway
10. Add a few secondary roads for transportation
11. At least 3 other features
12. A scale of distance(try 1 cm equals 1km)
13. Write your name and period on the reverse side
14. Key for colors
Hint: Start with a pencil sketch and decide generally where you want to put everything – and remember
from our observations of topographic maps, that it works best when the man-made features are built to go
with the topography. Review contour line “rules”.
