PlayDoh Enzyme Modeling Activity
Individually you will work to create images of the following enzymatic reactions and upload images on a document depicting
the stipulated components as stated below:
1. Create a KEY for the colors of PlayDoh that you will use.
a. Using a dry erase marker, on the upper RIGHT-HAND CORNER of your board write the following terms:
i. Enzyme
ii. Substrate
iii. Product
iv. Active Site
v. Allosteric Site
vi. Competitive Inhibitor
vii. Non-competitive Inhibitor
b. Then, place a DIFFERENT COLOR piece of PlayDoh on the table next to each term. You will use these
colors/PlayDoh throughout this activity to represent these aspects of enzymes/enzyme reactions.
2. Using your PlayDoh model the following ANABOLIC reaction on your table.
a. Create your model with your PlayDoh and add descriptions/captions to your board as needed.
i. LABEL this ANABOLIC REACTION on your model.
3. Using your PlayDoh model the following CATABOLIC reaction on your table.
a. Create your model with your PlayDoh and add descriptions/captions to your board as needed.
i. LABEL this CATABOLIC REACTION on your model.
4. Using your PlayDoh model the impact of a competitive inhibitor on the ability of the enzyme to function properly.
a. Create your model with your PlayDoh and add descriptions/captions to your board as needed.
i. LABEL COMPETITIVE INHIBITION on your model.
5. Using your PlayDoh model the impact of a non-competitive inhibitor on the ability of the enzyme to function
properly.
a. Create your model with your PlayDoh and add descriptions/captions to your board as needed.
i. LABEL NON-COMPETITIVE INHIBITION on your model.
6. Using your PlayDoh model the impact of denaturing on the ability of the enzyme to function properly.
a. Create your model with your PlayDoh and add descriptions/captions to your board as needed.
i. LABEL DENATURING on your model
7. Using your PlayDoh model the impact of a 4 step enzymatic pathway on the ability of the enzyme to function
properly and ultimately create the final product
a. Create your model with your PlayDoh and add descriptions/captions to your board as needed.
i. LABEL INTIAL ENZYME, ENZYME 2 , ENZYME 3, INTERMEDIATE SUBSTRATES AND FINAL PRODUCT
Extension:
Choose One of the situations depicted in your image and create a stop motion animation of the enzymatic process taking
pace to be uploaded on google classroom.
