The peripheral nervous system refers to :
1. all the branches of nerves outside of the central nervous system.
Those nerves are 2 types :
1. sensory nerves ( Neurons ) : They are attached to the posterior aspect of the spinal
cord and flow toward the central nervous system. Those nerves are responsible for
collecting the information then sending it to the central nervous system. (INPUT )
2. motor nerves ( Neurons ): They exit the anterior of the spinal cord and flow away
from the CNS. They are responsible for transmitting impulses ( OUTPUT ) to the
organs, glands and muscles.
1. Sensory Input : Sensory nerves are spread all throughout the body and are
constantly collecting information e.g. weight of an object.
2. Analysis / integration : the information collected by the sensory nerves are
analysed so the nervous system can generate appropriate responses
3. Motor output: which refers to the response initiated. e.g. reducing body
temperature by sweating.
