TH HE FAMILY GAME OF VISUAL PER RCEPTION N® INSSTRUCTIO ONS Agess: 6 to adultt Num mber of Playeers: 1 or more The object of the game is to o identify a SET S of 3 card ds from 12 caards placed face f up on the table. Eaach card has four features, which can vary as follows: f A SEET consists o of 3 cards in which each of the cards’ features, lo ooked at one e‐by‐one, are e the same on o each card d, or, are different on each card. All A of the feaatures must separately satisfy this ru ule. In other words: shap pe must be either the same on all 3 cards, or different d on eeach of the 3 cards; colo or must be eiither the sam me on all 3 caards, or diffeerent on each e of the 3, 3 etc. See EX XAMPLES below. A QU UICK CHECK ‐ Is it a SET?? If 2 cards are the same and 1 card is diffferent in an ny feature, th hen it is not a SET. For example, e if 2 are red and d 1 is purp ple then it is not a SET. A SET must bee either all th he same OR all different in each indivvidual featurre. EASY Y START For a quick intro oduction, start with the small s deck (ju ust the solid symbols). THE PLAY The dealer shufffles the cards and lays 12 2 face up on the table (in n a rectanglee) so that the ey can be seen by all. Plaayers remove SETs of 3 cards from m anywhere on the tablee. Each SET is i checked by the other players. If co orrect, the SET S is keptt by the playyer for one point and th he dealer rep places the 3 cards with 3 from the deck. A playyer must call SET befo ore picking up the cards. There are no turns, the first player to t call SET geets control off the board. After he/shee has calle ed SET, no other player can c pick up cards until that player has finished. The SET must be picked d up within a few seco onds after caalling it. If a player p calls SET S and doess not have one, o or if the SET is incorrrect, he/shee loses one point, p and the 3 cards are returned d to the tablee. If all playeers agree thaat there is no ot a SET in th he 12 cards, 3 more cards are laid face up on tthe table. Th he 3 cards are not replaced when thee next SET is found, redu ucing the num mber back to o 12. Note e: There are ~ 33:1 odds that a SET iss present in 12 1 cards, and d ~ 2500:1 odds when 15 5 cards are on o the table. The play continu ues until the deck is depleted. At the end of the game g there may m be cards remaining that do not form a SEET. The numb ber of SETs held by each player is theen counted. One O point is given for eacch SET. High score wins. If yo ou want a lo onger game, the deal passses to the person p on th he dealer’s left, and the play resumes with the deck bein ng reshuffled d. When all th he players haave dealt, th he game endss. The playerr with the higghest overall score wins.. Whe en playing so olitaire, if the player doees not find a SET, 3 morre cards are laid down with w a penaltty of one SETT. To win the game, th he player mu ust remove this penalty by b finding a SET S on the taable out of th he last 12 cards.
