Persuasive Speech
You will be writing a persuasive speech using “Monroe’s Motivated Sequence” to convince the king and queen to fund
your upcoming exploration based on your history and ideas. You are writing this speech like you are the explorer.
********This research will be done using AVL (http://www.avl.lib.al.us). In developing your persuasive speech outline
you will follow these 5 steps:
Day 1
1. Attention - Grab the king and queen's attention. This step is your introductory "listen up" call.
To make it effective it needs to grab the audience. It could be any of the following:a startling
statement, a rhetorical question, a quotation or a funny story. Here you will need to talk about
where you are from and your background.

2. Need - Establish there is a need demanding their immediate funding of your endeavor. Now that
you have your audience's attention you will clearly show them what the problem is and the
extent of it. Examples to illustrate how it impacts them - their happiness, future, health, family,
neighborhood… This part of your speech will need to describe where you plan to travel during
your exploring and what you will NEED to get there (ship's, crew, supplies).
3. Satisfaction - Outline the reasons this will benefit them (3 G’s). Give details about what you will
find on your trip and how it will be of benefit to the king and queen.
4. Visualization - Give them detailed accounts of what makes you qualified to lead an exploration,
what you have done in the past, and what will be gained from this adventure. This step relies on
your use of vivid imagery to portray the outcome of their action, or inaction. To bring it home to
your audience the pictures you provide, the stories you tell, need to be relevant and believable.
Remember that you are writing the speech before you embark on your travel. However, try to
describe how it could make this explorer famous. For example, if I take this voyage maps will be
created that will be used for thousands of years or a new culture discovered that will influence
our society.

5. Action - Provide the motivation you seek from doing this and explain what all you will need for
your journey to be successful. To be effective the action step must be readily doable and
executed as soon as possible. The call to action can be embedded in any combination of the
following:a summary, a quotation, a challenge or appeal, an example or a personal statement of
intent.
