AP Psychology | Inside Out Name: _________________________________________ Directions: As you watch the Inside Out… 1) define the term and 2) explain how the movie accounts for this term, and 3) explain why this is an accurate or inaccurate representation of the term. Unit 10: Trait Define: A characteristic pattern of behavior or disposition to feel and act, as assessed by self-report inventories/peer reports Movie Interpretation: The film uses the trait perspective to explain Riley’s personality. Each island represents a core aspect of her personality. Hockey Island most likely represents all the lessons she has learned through playing her favorite sport. Goofball and Honesty Island represent overwhelming characteristics of her innate behavior. Lastly, Friendship and Family Islands - like Hockey Island - likely represent the values she has learned from her family and friends. It is those values and relationships she has with her friends and family that constitute her identity. Application: According to the trait perspective, one would need to define personality in terms of observable behavior patterns that is, describing an individual’s traits instead of explaining them. In other words, Riley’s emotions in her head explain her personality based off of Riley’s experiences as opposed to a traumatic, hidden unconscious. It is Riley’s experience throughout life, as witnessed and narrated by her emotions that her personality islands form.
