Design a Mole Day Project Your challenge is to design a mole for display in our classroom. You will be assigned an element and will be expected to be creative with your design. Example: Fe (iron), mole material is “iron looking” and has a catchy name that represents the element. Hydrogen Mole Manganese Mole You must also create a Mole Authenticity Certificate stating: Your name Name of your mole Name of element it represents Atomic number Mass History of where this mole (element) is found in nature and how it is used in industry/ civilization. This certificate should be 7.5 cm x 13 cm (3” x 5”) and designed to stand up next to your mole for display. Construction: A pattern is included on the next page. You may use any type of fabric that will express your creativity as long as it is appropriate. Follow the pattern. The pattern allows for a 3/8 inch seam. Extra Credit: Fill your mole with 602 appropriately sized dry beans. Due Date: You will present moles in class on October 23 and tell the class how and why you came up with the idea you did. The student explains how the mole depicts the element (10 points) _________ 2. The mole is filled with 602 beans (EXTRA CREDIT – 5 points) _________ TOTAL POINTS (100) _________ Stuffed Mole Pattern On pieces of fabric, trace and cut two mole sides and one mole bottom using the patterns below. Reverse the pattern when tracing and cutting out the second side so that the outside will be on the outside of the completed mole. From felt fabric, trace and cut one mole nose and four mole paws using the patterns in the lower right corner of the page. Working from the inside and towards the tail area, sew the pieces of fabric together leaving a 3/8” seam all around. When reaching the tail area, turn the mole inside out, stuff with cotton or polyester batting, and hand stitch the tail opening. Glue or stitch the nose and paws in the appropriate areas and dress your mole in a creative fashion. Enjoy your newly found friend!
