Obtain a piece of chalk and a push-pin or probe. Carve something into the chalk. (your athletic number, name, etc.) Make your carvings deep enough to be seen or read. Place your name on a piece of tape and attach it to the petri dish lid. Place the chalk into the petri dish. Cover the chalk with the acetic acid, but not too full. Put the lid on the petri dish. Place your petri dish on the bookshelf in the lab. You will record your observations over the next several days to determine the effects of acid on your carving. DAY RESULTS QUESTION: Many building materials are made from calcium carbonate. Limestone and marble are pure calcium carbonate, and cement usually has calcium carbonate in it. Explain some of the consequences of acid rain on buildings in urban areas.
