Emergency Drills Consistency … Staff • So everyone knows who staff is – Substitutes – Service Center staff – First Responders Overview of Emergency Plans • School Staff Plan • School Specific Plan STAY … Go … • Preventive • Room Clear Lockdown • Reverse • Emergency Evacuation Lockdown • Evacuation • Tornado/ Severe Weather Preventive Lockdown • Hazardous conditions exist outside the building, but they do not pose an imminent threat • Examples – – – – Vicious animal(s) Criminal activity in the neighborhood Suspicious persons or vehicles in the area Others ?? • Action - Outside activities are curtailed and all doors are either locked or under constant supervision Emergency Lockdown • Rapid curtailment of all activities and the protection of everyone behind locked doors • Examples: – Intruder on site – Weapon on site – Other Intruder Emergency Lockdown Action Steps • Gather students, scan and shout into hallway/bathrooms • Lock classroom door • Turn off lights • Move out of view of windows • Ignore fire alarm absent evidence of fire Tips Windows should have the ability to covered quickly (roll-down shade, paper, etc.) If safe to do so, move barriers in front of door. Be prepared to take action if intruder accesses the room. Severe Weather Shelter • Examples - Tornado - Other weather related • Action – Go to secure location -Locations must be pre-designated - Does everyone know where this is? Reverse Evacuation • Rapidly moving students from the playgrounds, athletic fields or outside commons areas into the building – Examples: • Weather related • Environment related • Action – Double line, double time to safe haven Evacuation • Building is NOT safe • Examples: – Fire – Bomb Threat • Action – Move to safe haven • Don’t forget emergency safety tools (classroom safety bag, class roster, two-way radio, safety vest, etc.) Room Clear • Used for situations where students and / or staff appear to be in danger or to enable the employees to better manage • Students should be instructed to move to their designated room • Instruct students to stay together and notify staff in the buddy room of the incident. • Notify front office staff of the situation as soon as it is safe / practical to do so.
