Although interval training develops stamina in the body, it sometimes fails to
condition the mind to racing hard over a racing period.
Continuous running is done for distances over the normal racing distance at as near
possible to racing speed.
The runner needs a downhill course with a prevailing wind, recording the best time
they can, using a watch and mile markers to estimate progress.
During workouts, on this basis, the runner is subject to all the mental visions of
collapse that they would suffer in a race.
By fighting through these ‘black periods’ in training the runner makes them self aware
of the fact that most fatigue is only in the mind.
