The range of what we think and do
is limited by what we fail to notice.
And because we fail to notice
that we fail to notice
there is little we can do
to change
until we notice
how failing to notice
shapes our thoughts and deeds.
R.D. Laing
“If I really see you, I will laugh out loud, or fall silent, or explode into a
thousand pieces. And if I don’t, I will be caught in the cement and stone of my
own prison.”
Jalal al-Din Rumi
Each of us is like a person who pays blackmail to keep a feared reality from
becoming manifest. So paying, we maintain a semblance of peace at
increasingly heavy cost to our resources.”
James F.T. Bugental, Ph.D., ABPP
Search for Authenticity
(It is not whether we talk about the experience, it is whether or not we choose to talk about
it. It is our intentionality that counts. For in choosing we take responsibility for our life.)
In the Beauty Created by Others
Only in the beauty created by others is there consolation, in the music of
others and in others’ poems. Only others save us, even though solitude tastes
like opium. The others are not hell, if you see them early, with their foreheads
pure, cleansed by dreams. That is why I wonder what word should be used, he
or you. Every he is a betrayal of a certain you but in return someone else’s
poem offers the fidelity of a sober dialogue.

Moment
Clear moments are so short.
There is much more darkness.
More ocean than firm land.
More shadow than form.

Knowing
The calm surface of the pond
knows the arrival
of the smallest leaf.
